2021-22

The six matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed last week. The six winners joined the 26 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place on Thursday 26th August 2021 in Geneva. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2021-22. Once again most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).

The away goals rule, introduced by UEFA in 1965 has, after 56 years, been abolished for all two-leg KO Rounds. That rule doubled the away goals if the aggregate scores were level at the end of full-time in the 2nd leg. Extra time will now be played and, if the aggregate scores are still level aet, there'll be a shoot-out lottery. The default score for this comp has been changed from the away teams to draws (see comp rules below).

The group stage commences on Tuesday 14th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the UEFA Champions League Final will be played, after almost 8½ months, on Saturday 28th May 2022 at the Krestovsky Stadium in St Petersburg, Russia [it was built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup]. The stadium is on the island of Krestovsky. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 8th December 2021 and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 15th February 2022.

Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before (but with two changes, shown in blue). The rules for this comp are simple:

one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the draws away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus
pts), however, you receive the WS score if it's more than the draws aways.
Default for the semis, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
picks are H-x-A at full-time .. extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point .. or 1 of 2 if we have 12
or more runners, 1 of 3 if we have 18 or more runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you're the solo weekly winner without a bonus point, you score a bonus pt.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus points.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they
are identical, bonus points will be used.

Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please note that all kick-off times in all tipping threads for this comp are UK time. If you lodge your picks after the start of the first game, or fail to lodge, you score default for that round.

We've had multiple winners of this comp but, until 2020, no-one had won it back-to-back to successfully defend their title. That changed when N-Bomb won back-to-back titles. Howie72 has been on the podium six times, without a win and LeoDaVinci has been on the podium three times for zero wins. Sypher had been on the podium four times for zero wins, until last year. He won this at his 18th attempt.

This year's Champions League has 26 teams qualifying direct to the Group Stage of 32 teams. Once again a total of 79 teams, from 54 of the the 55 UEFA member nations, qualified for this year's competition (no team from Liechtenstein*), being 26 direct to the group stage (inside the white rectangle below) and two to the play-off round (counties #12 and #13) .. 10 of the other 51 teams progressed through the four qualifying rounds, to join the four who qualified direct to the six play-off round games. Those 12 teams are the ones outside the white rectangle.

The 32 teams playing in this year's group stage are: 11 champions from countries ranked 1–11 6 runners-up from countries 1–6 5 third-placed teams from countries 1–5 4 fourth-placed teams from countries 1-4 6 the six survivors from the play-off round 26 teams qualified direct to the group stage (inside the white rectangle). They bypass all five preliminary rounds .. the four qualifying rounds plus the Play-Off Round.

Villareal qualified as the Europa League winners, which gives Spain five teams in the group stage (Villareal finished 7th in their domestic league competition). The remaining six spots (the ones outside the white square) were filled from the 12 teams in the play-off round, being the 10 of 51 teams that made it through the four qualifying rounds, and the two teams that auto-qualified for the play-off round (champions of countries ranked 12 and 13). The six losers qualified for the Europe League group stage. Last year we had four teams auto-qualify for the Play Off Round -- The champions of countries ranked 12 & 13, plus the 3rd placed team from country 6, who were previously in the 3rd Qualifying Round -- Normally, two teams auto qualify for the play-off round (champions of countries #11 and #12) plus 10 from the other 51 teams. As the defending title-holder and the Europa League champions had already qualified through their domestic leagues, it became four auto-qualifiers for the Play-Off Round joined by 8 of the now 49 remaining teams ... and not 10 of 51 as is usually the case!

* the seven teams in Liechtenstein play in the Swiss national league. The winners of the Liechtenstein Cup qualify for the Europa League. No team from Liechtenstein has qualified to play in the Champions League through either route (through the Swiss League as winners or through the Europa League as winners).

* strike rate of 25% for a weekly win is probably an all-time record low for any FT tipping comp.

Last year's comp had 14 runners; ditto this year (zero no-shows ans zero newbies) .. 11 lined up at the starting gates, with three lodging their first picks in Round Two (Howie72, paper_aero and Sypher).

This year's comp, the 19th, didn't break any records. The all-time low remains the field of 13 runners set 11 years ago, in season 2009-10:

Round 1 of 19 saw just two of the eight games with double-digit correct picks. Two games were picked by no-one and two games were picked by everyone. We had four weekly winners with 5/8. At the other end four collected the wooden spoon with 3/8 .. and the remaining three are in between with 4/8.

There were zero bonus points.

The next round will be played in your neck of the woods either this afternoon/ tonight or tomorrow morning, as the case may be: UEFA ( 2 ) Wed 15th Sep. The first two games kick-off in
2½ hours.

As UEFA now don't count away goals as double, the default was changed this year from aways to draws.

I thought changing the default from aways to draws was enough of a penalty, as aways averaged 2.75/8
each round over the last 3 years, vs 1.67/8 for draws, which is a penalty of more than 1/8. The three
who missed R1 got lucky, as there were 4 draws.

Once again we had two games picked by no-one, which gave us eight winners with picks of 4/8 and one spoon with picks of 2/8. Everyone else scored 3/8. After just two rounds, everyone has a win or a spoon except for four players.

wwe84 is now all on his lonesome out front, with a four-way tie for 2nd place a mere point in arrears .. and 2 pts cover the rest of the field.

There were four bonus pts; and dg_dave collected two of them.

toocool4u is this round's winner. He climbs up from 7th to 2nd, a point behind wwe84, who retains the lead for the 3rd straight week. Behind the two leaders we have *nine* players separated by just one point!

Sheriff Tiraspol won away at Real in one huge upset. No-one picked this result. Real won possession 76% to 24%, had 30 shots at goal vs. 4 for the winners, 11 of those shots were on target vs.3, and had 13 corners to zero .. but still managed to lose to the unknown team from Moldova.

Sheriff didn't exist before 1996. They won promotion in their first season, and again in their second season, when they won promotion to Moldova's national league in 1998. They won the title 19 times over the next 23 seasons

toocool4u collected a bonus pt for picking the draw in Donetsk (the rest of us all had Inter to win away). He knew something the rest of us didn't. The other four bonus points: Howie72 and LeoDaVinci picked PSG to beat Manch City; ozzz2002 & wwe84 picked RB Leipzig to lose at home. Everyone's left wondering what these four saw that the rest of us didn't.

gtho4 is this round's winner. He replaces wwe84, who collected one of this round's three wooden spoon, at the top of the pile. From there we have a margin of 3 pts to the peloton.

The next 3 points cover *eleven* players, which is the rest of the field except for the two bring up the rear, who are a further point behind.

srini701 and gtho4 collected a bonus point for picking Benfica to beat Barcelona, who saw Lionel Messi leave the club at the start of the season to join PSG, as they couldn't afford to keep him on the payroll .. this saw srini701 climb up and off the last rung of the ladder.

toocool4u was the only one to retain his spot from the previous round. We were just one short of a perfect rendition of musical chairs.

N-Bomb is this round's winner with perfect picks of 8/8. He also collects a bonus point and climbs up the ladder from 8th to 2nd (2 points behind gtho4), replacing the *six* players who were previously tied for second place. Dizart, one of those six, now occupies 3rd place, a further point in arrears.

Behind the three out front , we have *nine* players separated by a mere 3 pts .. dg_dave and ozzz2002 retain their spots at the rear of the field.

Between us we averaged a strike rate of 76.1% (aka 6.1/8), the fourth-highest strike rate since the first Champions League comp some 18 years ago, back in 2004 (see new entry in Record Book above, highlighted in red). N-Bomb also earnt himself an entry in the Record Book with his perfect picks, the 18th perfect 8/8 achieved in this comp.

The three wooden spooners also earnt themselves an entry in the Record Book with picks of 5/8, which equals the second-highest WS score in the CL comp (curiously, the four all-time highest wooden spoon scores have all been achieved in the last 12 months).

There were four winners in Round 6. Howie72 and paper-aero scored their first for the season, which filled two more blanks in that column and leaving two players still looking for their first: LeoDaVinci and srini701.

There were *six* wooden spooners. All of them were encore performances, leaving the same four players spoon-less, still looking for their first: Sypher, Howie72, Dizart and gtho4.

We had four winners with 7/8 and six spoons with 5/8 which means, as 13 of 14 players lodged picks, these three players were struck in the middle. They all scored 6/8: Llynfi, Sypher and gtho4.

New high: paper_aero
New low : wwe84

The same three have now occupied the three spots out front for the 3rd consecutive round. The early season leader, wwe84, is now 5 pts behind the leader .. and the next 5 pts cover the rest of the field (10 of 14 runners) .. dg_dave and ozzz2002 retain their spots at the rear of the field.

In the previous round, R5, we averaged 76.1% between us, the fourth-highest strike rate since the first Champions League comp 18 yrs ago. In this round we averaged 73.1%, the fifth-highest strike rate! See new entry in Record Book above, highlighted in red.

The six wooden spooners also earnt themselves an entry in the Record Book with picks of 5/8 (same as previous round), which equals the second-highest WS score in the CL comp. This means that the *five* all-time highest wooden spoon scores have all been achieved in the last 12 months .. and toocool4u features in four of those five!

Last week MTrooper joioned us in the NBA comp. This week he joins us the Champions League comp. Welcome aboard!

We have a runaway .. five of the 8 games were upsets, which was of no concern to our leader, Howie72. He was one of four weekly winners and skips away to a mouth-watering 5 pt lead! That's four weekly wins on the trot by our Kiwi cousin.

The next 5 points cover five runners .. and 2 pts further back there's a traffic jam, where a mere 2 pts cover the next eight players.
