We've had a referendum question added to our October municipal election here in Alberta, about whether we want to abolish daylight savings, and stick for good with summer/daylight time.

I'm one of the few people I know who actually likes daylight savings. We're quite far north here, and there's a major change between the amount of daylight between winter and summer. If we stick with daylight time, kids will be coming home from school in the dark. And if we stick with standard time, hours of daylight are lost because everyone's sleeping - it's full daylight here at about 3:30 am in high summer.

Personally, I sleep so poorly at the best of times that the time change doesn't bother me, (and I'm retired and live alone, so nobody but me cares what time I get up) but I know a lot of people have real issues with it.

Wouldn't it be dark if you were on standard time? I know it's nearly completely dark at 5pm on the shortest day of the year here in northern Virginia.

School lets out between 3 and 3:30, because yes, it's full dark by four.
