|
| | |
The ICC T20 Cricket World Cup begins in the UAE and Oman from Sunday, October 17 (finals on November 14). We have never had a tipping comp in T20 Cricket World Cup here, but with back-to-back World Cups coming up, and with our World Cricket tipping comp laid to rest, I thought this might be a good idea to have a short and snappy competition here.
West Indies won the last T20 World Cup in 2016. Previous winners of the T20 World Cup include India (2007), Pakistan (2009), England (2010), West Indies (2012) and Sri Lanka (2014). These same countries have also made most of the finals (Australia made it to one finals in 2010).
With a total of 45 matches, the T20 World Cup will have two rounds. Round 1 will include twelve matches between eight teams from which four teams will progress to the Super 12s. The Super 12s, scheduled to start from 24 October 2021, will consist of 30 matches between the four teams from Round 1 and the top eight ranked T20 teams. Those teams will be split into two groups of six each. This will be followed by the two semi-finals and the final. We will cover the whole tournament in our comp here.
Prelim Round (top 2 from each group move to Super 12s) Group A: Sri Lanka, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia Group B: Bangladesh, Scotland, Papua New Guinea, Oman
Super 12s Group 1: England, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, A1, B2 Group 2: India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan, A2, B1
Scoring is simple. We just pick the result of each match and win a point for every correct tip. Bonus points if you pick a result solo (or 1 of 2 depending on participation). Default score will be the wooden spoon score.
Sign up here if you'd like to take part in this short competition that starts October 17.
Tie-breaker rules for placings:
If 2 or more people finish equal on scores, they would be placed according to the following tie-break rules:
1. The differential between HoF and wooden spoons (whoever has higher difference places higher) 2. If still equal, person with more number of HoF awards places higher 3. If still equal, person who makes more right tips in matches played (45 in this tournament)...bonus points scored will not come into picture for this.

There will be back to back T20 World Cups, so here's your chance to compete for the title of our first-ever winner in this brand new comp
[*]It will not be easy though, as T20 is still the most unpredictable format and any of 6 or 7 teams have a good chance to win it all. The tournament itself got off to a shock start with Scotland upsetting World ranked #6 Bangladesh on the opening day. Hosts Oman got off to a winning start, as did Sri Lanka and Ireland, who will both expect to qualify for the Super 12s from their group.
[*]We had a very decent start, with 8 of us landing the opening round honours, missing only the Bangladesh upset. ozzz2002 starts with a spoon for 2 brave picks that did not come off.

[*] Sri Lanka and Bangladesh duly took their places in the Super 12s as well, but Scotland also surprised a lot of people, by topping their group with 3 wins. Which means that in the Super 12s, one group has 6 Test teams and is super-heavy (Australia, England, West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka), while the other group will probably be a shoot-out between 3 teams, unless one of the lesser lights can pull a surprise somewhere (India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Scotland, Namibia).
[*] LeoDaVinci picked the Namibia upset of Ireland, and is rewarded with the first bonus point of our comp. That puts him in the lead too. Sypher and ozzz2002 have some catching up to do now.

Here's an interesting stat: NO team has ever had a "perfect" T20 World Cup so far, right from 2007, in all 6 editions....England and Pakistan have BOTH had a perfect run so far. Can one of them do it this year? let's see....have some of us probably made smart picks on New Zealand and Australia to win the title?...who knows??
[*] paper_aero seems to know everything this year! He's had another perfect round and a 5th HoF in 6 rounds (he only missed round 4), and opens up a good 4 point lead over the defaulting LeoDaVinci (who probably lost out on a potential 3 points for advance pick for champion this round).

Howie72 is hereby declared the "official jinxer of teams" in our competitions here now
[*] Both semifinals were very good and pretty evenly fought till around the 35th over of the match....New Zealand had Darryl Mitchell and Jimmy Neesham slam away from there, while Australia had Marcus Stoinis and Mathew Wade take the game away from Pakistan from then on. Howie72 can also breathe easy on the boundary count too as New Zealand was one better over England there too (19 to 18). New Zealand will play their first T20 World Cup final while Australia will play their second (they lost the 2010 final to England). Promises to be a cracker of a final, even if New Zealand have lost their wicketkeeper-batsman Conway now to a freak and funny accident AFTER he was dismissed.
[*] paper_aero did not lodge picks for the semis, but he had 3 advance picks scoring for him to keep him 4 points ahead of LeoDaVinci going into the final round. N-Bomb also did not lodge picks this round, and ozzz2002 takes advantage of that to move into podium position now, getting both his semis picks correct. Llynfi and ozzz2002 are the ONLY ones here to have a live pick for the finals, as they picked Australia and New Zealand respectively to win it all, while the rest of us all had England or Pakistan.

In a tournament largely dominated by toss, Aaron Finch won the toss in 6 of his 7 matches, but his side also played aggressively and like champions when it mattered. In a rather one-sided final despite the high scores, Australia comfortably beat New Zealand for the 5th consecutive time in any ICC knockout match. For New Zealand, this was a second consecutive ICC finals loss (after 2019 World Cup)....they do everything and beat India all the time, except win trophies, eh?
[*] paper_aero had won our comp here after the semifinals itself, even though he didn't lodge his picks last round! For good measure he added 3 points in the final round to romp to a 5 point margin. But behind him there was a logjam between 3 people for the silver and bronze medals. Any one of them could have landed the silver outright if they had got the bonus point of sixes hit in final right (I had given + or - 2 allowance too). ozzz2002 finally lands the second place on a better tie-break. LeoDaVinci will probably rue missing one round, and not lodging advance pick for champion. He takes 3rd place, again on better HoF-spoon differential over Llynfi, who was the only one to get full 3 points for advance picks for champion.
[*] The next T20 World Cup is less than a year away, in Australia. Only one team wins in Australia anyway .... India ...let's see if Howie72 can jinx India in 2022 Congratulations to paper_aero, ozzz2002, and LeoDaVinci and a big thank you to all who participated....
