The FA Cup is the world's oldest football knock-out competition (it began 150 years ago in 1872). The 2021 comp will be the 140th edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in September (rather than the usual mid-August). To ease fixture end-of-season congestion there are no replays for the 2022 FA Cup from the 5th Round onwards. The Football Association has accepted entries from 729 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 637 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The all-time record field is 763 teams, which was set in 2012. The 92 league teams are the 44 in the FAPL (20) and FLC (24), plus the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).- the 4th and last qualifying round for the 637 non-league teams was played last weekend Saturday 16th October.
- the 32 survivors from the qualifiers join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 in the First Round (equals 80 teams).
- the 20 survivors from the Second Round join the FAPL and FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams).
- from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's tipping comp will run for a bit over 6˝ months over 10 rounds from Saturday 6th Nov 2021 until Saturday 14th May 2022 (First Round through to the FA Cup Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp, we only lodge picks on 8 occasions, as follows:- the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
- we also have advance picks thrown in so that all 10 rounds are worth 16 pts each.

The rules for the FA Cup tipping comp are simple (they're the same as last year): points
default
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win. In other words,
it's always at 90 minutes; penalty-shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you forget to pick, you will receive the wooden spoon score (this includes
advance picks).
you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players if we
have 10+ runners; or one of three if we have 18 or more runners.
one bonus point for 10+/16;
13/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they
are identical, bonus pts will be used. |
This year's comp is the 20th edition of the FA Cup tipping comp. Last season's comp was won by Howie72. With his win in 2019, N-Bomb became the second player to win this comp three times ... srini701 was the first to win this three times (2015). Between them, ozzz2002 and N-Bomb had won the five comps from 2016 to 2020. Howie72 won last year for the first time, in his 6th podium appearance. Three years ago the FA Cup comp had a field of 14 runners. The following year we again had 14 runners (we lost ElfTwinkle but gained Llynfi). Last year we lost PaulE, which made it a field of 13 runners. This year we're back to a field of 14 .. everybody's back for another dose, plus andymuenz. Welcome aboard!
LeoDaVinci was the only player to reach double digits. He shares the lead in a three-way tie with andymeunz and gtho4. We had four wooden spoons with 5/16.
As was the case last year in R1 (and the year before), ozzz2002 starts this year's comp with a wooden spoon, probably a unique hat-trick. But R1 is very early in the season and, sometimes, doesn't mean much .. ozzz2002 came back to win the 2020 comp in a canter, by 16 pts! Dizart and paper_aero filled the minor placings. The defending title holders is Howie72 who, again, won it from Dizart and paper-aero.

Llynfi is this round's winner with 11/16. Add on two bonus points and he climbs up the table from 10th place to second.
The first five are covered by just 2 points and the next *eight* are also covered by just 2 points The remaining payer, wwe84, is bringing up the rear 3 pts adrfit of the field.
LeoDaVinci collected the wooden spoon and, after just 2 rounds, has filled in all three columns: a weekly win, a wooden spoon, and a bonus point.
There were eight bonus pts this round .. seven were for solo picks and one for picks of 10+/16. The biggest R1 upset was St Albans City beating L2 leader Forest Green Rovers. Three players picked this, but bonus pts are only awarded for solo picks or one of two.
The draw for Round Two took place on Sunday. The games will be inserted into the tipping thread when the replays of the R1 drawn games are completed next week.

A round of upsets saw no-one reach double figures. Howie72 was this round's winner with 9/16 .. andymuenz collected the wooden spoon with 5/16.
We had seven bonus points: ozzz2002 and George95 collected two each. Dizart and wwe84 collected their first for the season.
We almost had a perfect rendition of musical chairs: everyone swapped places except for first and last, which were the only chairs with the same occupant. George95 moved up 7 spots from 9th to 2nd .. paper_aero was the biggest mover in the opposite direction, falling from 6th to 11th.

The margin out front is unchanged at 1 pt, with a similar gap between 2nd and 3rd. A further point back we have a peloton of *ten* players separated by a mere 2 points! R3, in the first week of January, may see a perfect rendition of musical chairs.

Once again a round of upsets saw no-one reach double figures. The three weekly winners all scored 50% correct with picks of 8/12 .. wwe84a collected his 2nd wooden spoon with 5/16.
We had nine bonus points: George95 collected *four* of them and replaces gtho4 out front. In the last round George95 moved up seven spots from 9th to 2nd. The margin out front is now out to 4 pts, the largest all season. The next 4 pts cover the peloton of *eleven* runners (aka as the entire field apart from the three tail-enders).
Dizart, who retains 3rd place, was the only runner in the top half of the field who kept his spot, as the rest played musical chairs.

The FA Cup continues to spring surprises. Newcastle United join the list of teams from the top tier of English football who've lost, at home, to a team from the third tier or lower. No-one picked this upset. Non-league Boreham Wood beat 3rd tier Wimbledon, in another huge upset. George95 picked this!
Next, we had non-league Kidderminster Harriers (from the sixth tier, no less), beat FLC team Reading. No-one picked this result, but George95 and Llynfi score a bonus point each for, somehow, picking a draw.

We had fewer upsets in this round, which saw 8 of us (half the field) reach double figures. George95 sees his 4 pt margin out front evaporate. He's joined by this round's winner, andymeuz, with picks of 12/16 .. he was 6 pts in arrears at the end of the previous round.
A further 2 pts in arrears a peleton of *seven* is separated by a mere 3 pts .. add that all up and we have a spread of just 5 points covering the first 9 of 15.
