NEW YORK, Sept. 18 — At the top of Manhattan, under the world’s busiest bridge, stands a perfectly utilitarian lighthouse. While it hasn’t shone since 1947, it has continued to admirably perform that most valuable of duties: pleasing children. Tuesday night, its beacon was restored.

I grew up within walking distance of the George Washington bridge. It would have been delightful to see that lighthouse shine.
I don't think I ever got to read the book about the bridge and the lighthouse, but I'm sure I would have loved it. I was always absolutely fascinated by that bridge looming up on the horizon behind all the apartment buildings. I always took it as a symbol of far-off places and journeys to made. That bridge was a constant presence during my childhood and an important part of my memories.

I am glad to see that some of the lighthouses are being restored, kept as museums or for historical value. It will be a sad day if all lighthouses and old wooden barns are allowed to fall to ruin. Call me a sentimental schmuck, but I love old barns and lighthouses. Guess my dad's love of them has rubbed off on me.

THat's sweet, I too love covered bridges, barns and lighthouses.
