My Bus Ride quiz today produces a list of 58!

I love using a button instead of a drop-down to rate a quiz - in my early days, I sometimes accidentally changed the drop-down to be very poor because I hit page down to move down the page. (I was still doing it on occasion, but learned to look back and check.) Now it's a single conscious choice - and the colors make it really obvious. Love it.

"Had an idea, but it depends on how far back stats tracking goes back. I know there's loads of quizzes I played in the past before I had knowledge on the subject, like quizzes on bands or TV shows, likely because they were part of a challenge list or a quiz of the hour. What about an "improve scores" feature where you can play old quizzes after a certain amount of time and if you improve your old score you get the number of points per questions improved on, so from 5 last time to 10 this time you'd get 75 points. Could even be a badge to improve your score on 500 quizzes or something. But it obviously depends how long our scores on each individual quiz are tracked for."

I like the idea of allowing players to re-take quizzes from the past and get some sort of credit for it. In fact, I don't think that you should even have to improve on your score to get credit. It should be completely okay to take a quiz that you took a while back that you want to re-enjoy and get something for doing so.

Maybe: Gold member feature (since we need to use GM quiz playing stats): allow retaking any quiz that you haven't taken in the past 90 days. You score half points for a retake, regardless of what score you get on your retake.

I'm hesitant to add awards or badges to "improving scores" given the obvious loophole of scoring 1/10 on an entire category, waiting 90 days, and then scoring perfectly on them all.

Thoughts?

I'd think 90 days might be too low - maybe a half year so it would be bona fide replaying instead of consistently playing a certain selection of quizzes for points. The threshold for re-eligibility for 24 Hours etc. is 60 days and 90 would still be relatively close to that. I'd also suggest limiting these replays per day, maybe to 25 (or a certain number of points), to prevent spamming replays as easy outs to gain both 24H credit and points.

A badge for improving would be viable, but it should only be for quizzes that you have previously scored better than guesswork on (i.e. 4/10 or above). The badge would be based on the amount of questions improved, so going from 6 to 9 would be 3 questions' worth of credit. Maybe there could be a page that suggests random quizzes that would be good targets for improvement - best past score 40% to 60% and of sufficient age.

The reason I mention 90 days is that's all the current stat system allows. We either know that a player has played a quiz in the past 90 days, or that they have played within the past 22 years. Nothing in the middle.

That is certainly all doable with the existing system.

Add: any rewards for "improvement" should be small. The quiz system answers are readily available to anyone, anytime. It is trivial to cheat.

I think the original concept of awarding the "new" points is best. If you can replay 20 or 25 quizzes a day and only get credit for actual improvement, this is self-limiting, but a badge, especially with the "suggest candidates" feature would be a nice incentive to revisit a few quizzes each day.

I would not want to let a player score for repeating easy 10/10s - this kind of replay is already rewarded by 24 Hours and their ilk.

An idea. I think it would be helpful if the quiz list page gave an indication of how many quizzes you have completed in each list. Once and a while I discover a quiz list that I have already completed 4/5 quizzes, making it pretty easy to complete the list...if I know about it. Thanks!

I like the idea of the half credit (or at least something) for replaying quizzes. To me, one of the most annoying things is when I get a daily challenge of "Play x of the following y quizzes" only to find out that I've already played most of the quizzes and am playing 15+ quizzes without getting any points.

Fantastic updates with quiz sorting Terry! It's specifically great to be able to sort by difficulty, # of questions and date placed online.

An odd thing about the dates on quizzes is that they show the date they were most recently updated on pages with multiple quiz listings. I would recommend quizzes show the date that they were originally published in these lists. When you sort quizzes by newest first it actually lists them by the date originally published but the date listed on the category page shows the date last edited causing the dates to be all out of order and many older quizzes don't even have a date on those pages. I played a quiz today that showed a date on the category page of September 2020 that when I actually played it was originally published in 2001.

This was done intentionally before these most recent changes but I agree it trivializes the 'sort by date' function.

I think most players, if they're looking for what you're talking about, Wes, would just look for the easy quizzes in that category.

FWIW I concur with agony.

Terry, I found a similar bug in the questions at the bottom of the John Wayne subcat in Celebrities T-Z. Clicking on the buttons for the answers doesn't do anything. Looks like the same problem with the BUTTON script?

After a bit of thought I am siding with this idea for GMs.

It would be:

1. Quiz directories and clicking through to a quiz show your historical best score for that quiz (already done). ex "12/20".

2. Any quiz can be retaken for point-consideration if taken at least 90 days after your last play. A note will appear at the top of the quiz telling you if you are eligible for replay points. You can play within the 90 day window if you want for no credit.

3. If you beat your "best score" for that quiz, you earn full points based on your improvement. So scoring 16/20 on a quiz you used to have 12/20 on and you'd earn 4 correct questions worth of points.

4. In addition, you earn a small token replay bonus for the other questions you got correct. Perhaps 1/4 credit or something. Something to make you feel like you got something, but not enough to make taking replays a viable point collecting strategy.

5. If you did not rate the quiz in the past you can rate it on a replay.

Sound good?

Great idea. It's frustrating to get no credit for challenges requiring 15-20 quizzes that I've already played,

It would be good to receive further credit for QOTH and Daily Bus Ride quizzes.

I notice that this thread is about ideas to make quiz playing more fun.

The biggest thing that would do it for me is in quizzes with FITB.

I don't know how many times I've accidentally hit Enter and submitted the quiz before it was complete.

I'd love to see a warning message if any of the FITB fields are blank, along with the opportunity to complete the quiz.

This would be especially welcome with Brain Twist quizzes.

Ditto me for FITB. And I especially have a bad habit of hitting Enter after the 10th question as my mind thinks I'm finished.

And for me...my eye has, from time to time, caught the "True or False" or "Difficult" text box which divides the questions which then sends my hand to the "Enter" button. Perhaps they could be less prominent, i.e., not highlighted quite so much? Or do they need to be there at all?

So what should enter do? Nothing at all? Go to the next question?

I’m thinking it safest if enter does nothing. Otherwise quizzes where enter doesnt work that way will have people to be trained to be submitting quizzes after first question.

Quizzes would have to be submitted by a click of the submit button.

A click of the submit button, or pressing Enter when it has the focus.

My usual tactic is to use Tab to jump from field to field. After the final question, Tab moves to the submit button.

I like this idea - enter only works when the submit button is highlighted. Would be great for all quizzes. Some people don't use a mouse; they tab through the questions and answers.
