Tipping Competition

A-League football (soccer) is back for another year so get your names down and your dartboards out for another lucky dip.
The rules as the same as last year:

Threads will close prior to the start of the first game.
A bonus point will be awarded for a perfect score.
Bonus points will also be awarded for anyone that tips a result solo.
Ties at the end of the season will be broken in the following order:
1) HoF/Spoon differential
2) Most Hall of Fame awards
Picks of all home games - not eligible for any bonus points.
Default will be equal to the lowest score each round.
Late starters will be given a score equivalent to the last-placed active tipster.

The first round starts on Friday 19th November (the usual October start has been put back due to covid) and ends on Friday 29th April 2022 (the usual early-April finish has been put back). Most rounds will kick off on Friday evening local time but, due to the late start to the season, some rounds start on weekends and some start mid-week. Threads will close at kick-off in the first game.

This year's comp will be the 17th A-League season. Last year wwe84 won his first-ever A-League title. N-Bomb is the only payer to win this comp more than twice (three straight 2016, 2017 and 2018 plus one six years ago in 2014 .. aka four of the last eight comps). N-Bomb is the only player to retain his or her title. Will this season see wwe84 become the second to retain his title? All will be revealed over the coming months.

Welcome to the 2021/2022 A-League tipping competition aka the Competition of Torture. Once again Wellington Phoenix are forced to base themselves in Australia and they start the season with a young squad as border restrictions in New Zealand meant they were unable to bring in experienced players to replace those that left while most other teams seem to have recruited reasonably well. Last season we had 11 runners and this season we have 12 - all 11 from last season plus a big welcome to MTrooper. Can anyone beat wwe84, the defending champion, or even break into the Australian trifecta (including gtho4 and ozzz2002) from last season? We shall find out.
Two goals just before half-time were enough to see Melbourne Victory repel a raid by Brisbane and start their defence of the title with a win though the Roar made it a tight contest with a goal midway through the second half and were denied a draw with a disallowed late goal. For the first time in 4 years the Sydney derby finished level with neither Western Sydney nor Sydney able to find the back of the net. Melbourne Victory escaped with an away win over Western United after the home team were controversially denied a late penalty. It finished in a stalemate out west as Perth and Adelaide fought out a 1-1 draw with both teams having disallowed goals in the second half. Central Coast got off to a winning start at Newcastle in the F3 derby despite having just 32% possession, surviving a late Jets comeback. Macarthur and Wellington also fought out a 1 all draw in a wet and windy conditions, a Phoenix first half penalty cancelled out by a superb volley finish after sustained Bulls pressure at the start of the second half, both teams had chances to win but neither side took them.
We start the season by going 25/72 for a strike rate of 34.72% and that was after going 10/11 in the first game. The first bonus point of the season goes to wwe84 for his solo tip of the draw between Western Sydney and Sydney.
Round 1 sees two weekly winners as wwe84 and srini701 both went 4/6. On the other hand 4 spoons were handed out for 1/6 and they went to paper_aero, MTrooper (not the best debut), LeoDaVinci and George95.
Thanks to his bonus point, wwe84 finds himself where he ended last season, out in front with a 1 point lead of the tortured srini701 with ozzz2002 a further point back. Not surprisingly the four spoon winners bring up the rear.

An under-strength Perth started an 8 game road trip with a scrappy loss to Western United, the goal coming late in the game with a tap in from a low cross that hit the post. Wellington stretch their club record run of games without a defeat to 13 with a hard fought won over Central Coast despite missing a late penalty. Melbourne City let a 2-0 lead slip at Adelaide after the home team came back to equalise in the 90th minute. An early goal was enough for Macarthur to overcome Sydney, the home team unusually not having scored in their first 2 games. Melbourne Victory fly high to start the season after a comprehensive win over Brisbane, they are two for two with no goals conceded. Western Sydney were lethargic and lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw against Newcastle, their goals coming from 2 Jets defensive blunders.
Round 2 was slightly worse tipping than Round 1 as we went 23/72 for a strike rate of 31.94%. A bonus point was earned by ozzz2002 for his solo tip of a draw between Western Sydney and Newcastle. The easiest game to tip was Western United's win over Perth which saw 8 of us get correct. On the other hand, no one predicted Macarthur would win away at Sydney.
Round 2 sees five weekly winners as wwe84 (consecutive wins to start the season), ozzz2002, Howie72, George95 and N-Bomb all went 3/6. Two spoons were handed out to srini701 and Sypher who tipped the season's first goose egg with 0/6.
wwe84 remains a point out in front but now it is ozzz2002 in second with Howie72 and N-Bomb a further 2 points back in third. At the bottom we find Sypher, paper_aero and LeoDaVinci wo are a point behind MTrooper.

Wellington Phoenix are playing their home games in Australia, looking likely to be for the whole season.
Wellington Phoenix ended their unbeaten streak with a loss to the Western Sydney in a very controversial fashion, two terrible VAR decisions cost the Phoenix and the A-League put out their usual token apology after admitting the VAR decisions were wrong. Brisbane and Adelaide cancelled each other out with a scoreless stalemate though the Roar had more shots on target. Western United upset Melbourne City, a first half goal was enough to settle the game despite Melbourne dominating possession and creating more of the better second half chances. Sydney let a 2 goal advantage slip at home against Newcastle to draw though a 77th minute Sydney goal was disallowed due to offside and the Jets held on for the point. Macarthur escaped with a narrow victory over Central Coast after a wicked deflection wrong-footed the Mariner's goalkeeper, the goal was later credited as an own goal which meant the original shot was going wide. Perth handed Melbourne Victory their first loss of the season with a 3-0 win, helped by the Victory playing the second half with 10 men after a red card.
Round 3 was a tipping disaster as we went 12/72 for a strike rate of 16.66% and an average of one correct tip each. A bonus point was earned by Sypher for his solo tip of a Perth win at Melbourne Victory. The "easiest" game to tip was the draw between Brisbane and Adelaide though only 5 of us got it right. On the other hand, no one predicted Melbourne City would lose at home to Western United or Newcastle would grab a draw at Sydney.
Round 3 sees three weekly winners as wwe84 (making it 3 n a row to start the season), N-Bomb and gtho4 all went 2/6. Three more spoons were handed out for goose eggs as Llynfi, George95 and ozzz2002 all went 0/6.
wwe84 increases his lead to 3 points over ozzz2002 and N-Bomb with Howie72 and gtho4 a point further back. We now just have paper_aero and LeoDaVinci at the bottom after Sypher's solo pick bonus point takes him a point clear.
