Windows is like Education. The more you think you know , the more you realise What a waste it is.

I had a cam (samsung) whose driver's weren't windows logo tested. Though the camera works well, every time i boot my comp, a "safely remove hardware" option comes.
Not a major problem but irritating
If anyone has a solution other than
1)remove the cam
2)contact windows guys(you willl realise what a waste of time it is )
I will appreciate it!

Just trying to get things clear. Is this a webcam that is connected to the computer all the time and when it boots up you get the error message?

Do you feel that the message is a Windows operating system one, or that it is more to do with the camera software?

yeah this is a Samsung digimax ( a web cam combined with digicam). well the driver works well , the problem it is not approved by windows XP (now the funny part: the driver is there in the windows cd).
A small icon is present near the clock in the taskbar ( the place where startup programs icons are shown)
Note :there is no message , it is a windows XP feature to remove any software that was not approved by it and according to them can cause problem.
(Any one can get it - all you have to do is UPGRADE to XP. wait - isn't simple?).

Ah right. I'm not on familiar ground with XP yet, I'm still on W98 SE. I know XP is particular about the hardware it runs with though. I understand what you mean about the icon now.

I suppose the only thing you can do is keep looking out on Samsung's site for their own XP driver and hope that it makes the icon go away. You'd think Windows own one should be OK really though. If the webcam is new enough I'm sure Samsung will write a driver for it eventually.

At least it isn't stopping things from working but an icon telling you that something is wrong, when it really isn't, I know can be annoying.

Wait till you hear this:
I had already gone to samsung site , according to them - windows will give this message (about the driver) BUT dont worry there is no problem , use the Cam
Now windows in their CD gives the driver of samsung digimax (the cam I am using) but warns that it does not have the windows tested logo.
Why did they put it in the Cd first place?
Man - sometimes I wonder what these microsoft guys are thinking when they do such incredible things?

p.s XP is a lot different from SE - it is more comfortable(strange its a microsoft product) - the only issue with XP is compatability with other software.

I expect after a couple of service packs and a few fixes all will be well. I think there's always the push to turn out new software and it often seems they should have ironed out a few bits and pieces before rushing to release it. As with W98 SE the software always works well in the end.

I don't have any complaints about W98 SE but this computer hard disk was making strange noises this morning. It's quite old an if it does end up in trouble I'll probably upgrade rather than fix it. Then it will be XP time for me too.

I used to work for MS, and I know what a pain it is getting ahold of someone- especially someone with brains.

Fortunately, they have a wonderful database online, where you can search for articles relating to your problem, search for problems related to a specific piece of software, or post in the newsgroups there for some advice. The address is http://support.microsoft.com
