A witness who described the Washington area sniper, his assault rifle and his cream-colored van gave police a phony story, investigators said Thursday in a setback that casts doubt on much of what the public thought it knew about the roving killer. Prosecutors said charges may be brought against the witness, whom one law-enforcement official described as an ex-convict “who just lied to get his 15 minutes of fame.”

The above is from MSNBC. Can you believe this? He intentionally misled investigators so they WEREN'T looking for the right vehicle. So the killer may have ended up slipping past police because they were focused on something else!

It turns out that this 'witness' wasn't even in the parking lot at the time of the shooting - he was in the Home Depot shopping!

I really think the media has messed up this case - first off all, the killer probably wants all of this on the front page of the news and on tv all the time - and the media are giving it to him. Then they interview a ton of people who may/may not be credible witnesses.

We're all on pins and needles right now hoping he doesn't show up again - and praying that if he does, no one else is killed.

Still thinking on ya', Lady MacB. I heard of this phony, also. All I could think was that perhaps the half million in reward money looked good, or fame, or maybe that "non witness" was mentally ill, too! I remember, in old, far less sensational crimes, that certain folks would show up annually claiming responsibility for whatever sensational murder had happened recently. Called them "confessing johnnies", I believe. Like clockwork. Maybe this phony witness was akin to those! Glad there have been no current snipings. It just keeps you waiting, though. Hate to say it, but it's true. I want to see the sniper(s) caught and brought to justice! Though it would be ok if the spree just "stopped", it wouldn't be very satisfying for all who have suffered to this point.

It's just sick, isn't it? It has me beat why someone would pretend like that. It is only wasting police time and rescources that could've been spent in far better ways.

This person is going to be charged?

Stay safe, LadyM and anyone else in the area.
