Sunset here in Southern Europe, lovely skies. Lasagna cooking. We're going into the daylight savings time weekend. Many people here attribute colds and flu to this time change; But then again, if I ever finish my book on France, the number one cause of kicking the bouquet...is drafts...and ice water. I'm a germ theory person, so I get tired of the drafts thing. By the way, I'm happy we actually have a person from a half hour time zone.. Do we have any Canadians from one? I'm sure they have one..I was in Maine then Canada one time and was in it. Or did I dream that?
Oh yes, I did see Virginia creepers turning red, but the climate here isn't as good for that; Anyone from New England? That's the most gorgeous fall color I've ever seen! Looks like you landed in a gumdrop forest...upstate New York and Vermont.

To be quite frank, I didn't understand this clock changing - now everyone who's anyone talks about changing their clocks? I am blissfully ignorant of this phenomenon because out here we have one standard time even though India technically falls under three time zones.

But, Ace? Don't you have any friends? I keep track of this information only because of my friends, businesses and correspondents in various locations around the world! Tonight's the night, by the way, for us, at least...one hour back! ~Lea

How well I recall the time in India, we arrived at the train station to take a train up to Delhi from Madras, we asked the gentleman when it would leave, I believe his answer was that it would leave when it would leave...I don't know why they bothered with a schedule really. It arrived when it arrived. It took three days. But it was an interesting experience.
Here in the South of France we call it Midi time, you give people leeway and expect them to arrive about 15 minutes late. So the trains aren't a whole lot different than in India really. Warmer climates have different ideas about time in my experience. My computer changed time without informing me...how cheeky!
My Nike watch is impossible to reset...I'm whining about it...as throughout my whole British trip I had to calculate the hour difference as it's so hard to set, I didn't bother. Plus you can eat earlier in the UK than you can in France. Normally I was the only one for miles around who set others' watches and now, this little Nike watch the kids gave me, is impossible!

well Talking of trains of India, it's a legacy we got from the British and more so with respect to Punctuality. (Before they came, we used to arrive at least an hour early, now we go 3 days late!) Heather - the gentlemen you talked to is the perfect Indian gentleman! Bindaas! Anyway someone please answer the question - why do you have to change the time?

Yes, but it isn't changing the clocks that enables us to "make more efficient use of daylight" in summer. We do that by getting up and going to bed and doing everything else an hour earlier.
If most people want to do things an hour earlier in the spring and summer, I'm content to fall in with them. But I don't like my government telling me "We think you're too lazy to get up an hour earlier. We also think you're so dumb that, if we can persuade you to fiddle with your clock, you won't actually notice that it's earlier!"

Well good thing you're in here Ozzzz, at least there's always a light on at Funtrivia!
Does anyone recall during the Carter administration, we didn't go on daylight savings time? Or did I dream that. I mean back in the States.
Ace, he was a perfect Madras gentleman, along with the characteristic Indian nod that signals the opposite until you get the hang of it...fortunately I was accustomed to it from professors at my university. French rail, what marvels they've done here, and yet you still have train delays for leaves on the tracks.

It's 3-45 p.m on Sunday afternoon and since the clocks are now altered the sun is starting to sink.
We have gales here at present. 90 mph gusts have been reported and, sadly, some deaths ...two of them were children.
We lost power for a few hours today presumably because of damage to the electricity grid. Winds are expected to subside later this evening.

Heather! I have found a Daylight Savings Time Quiz and it might answer your Carter question. I'm posting it here, but feel free to move it. I'm sure it will only be interesting for a brief window of time (excuse the pun)...but it's ONLY about DST in the United States. Geez...just remove it if it's not right! http://www.syracusevoice.com/cgi-bin/quizz.pl/ask/quest.html?dls

June - thanks for that!
Heather - there are only two types of trains here - one that tries to stay on the rail (in the process, it gets Late!) and the other type which tries to take a shortcut all the time (Never worked all these years). Nowadays the latter rules!

Ace, while we're on the subject, why does the train end up north of Delhi or something, then backtrack? Did I dream it? I mean, it was late at night...it stopped then reversed directions!
THanks, I got about 7 right, and my suspicions were right about the daylight savings time...I recall riding my bike, I trained for a while with a fourteen mile a day trip...in the pitch black.

the brillant rail designs of the British! (and some Indian geniuses) - It happens in certain cities where there are two or more stations (Cochin etc) and each station is haphazardly placed.
I can't tell exactly unless you tell me the station name. But of course because we still use Push -pull engines, there is another explanation
If they have to change the engine at a station, another engine attaches to the back (now it becomes the front); so some people might think the train is going back.
There is another explanation : When you were in India, did you try something called "Bhang".

Our clocks didn't change, but we still had some confusion Sunday. The clock on our computer had been an hour ahead of us for some reason. So we just simply subtracted and hour to know what time it was. At 2 am Sunday it reset itself to the correct time. We'd never noticed it doing that before. Sunday afternoon, Mr. Moo was subtracting an hour, as we always did, thinking he had plenty of time to get ready for work. I happened to look at the clock in the kitchen and realized it was time for him to be going. When I told him what time it was, he said "Oh ----!" and raced through the quickest shower on record and was out the door.
