I can see clearly now the X is gone...all of those dark clouds have disappeared...ooops, best get me down to the music section for that...
I was seeing an x yesterday. Now I can see something but as I'm not quite wearing glasses yet at my advanced age...I'm not sure if it is a plane.

Now I'm drumming on my desk playing Wipe out! Like any self respecting California kid would be!

One thing...how can you make your own avatar, like I'm guessing Silverginger did?

Making your own avatar requires an Paint program of some kind and some practice at using it. Generally, the more you pay for the program the better are the effects that can be produced with it.
Many software companies that write Paint programs often give away early versions of their products with computer magazines. I suggest looking out for something like this. It would be quite adequate for making a pretty good avatar.
If, after that, you find that producing artwork holds no interest for you, then you will have spent no money in finding that out.

I found that Ranchoweb is now charging $9.95 to host. Villagephotos.com hosts for nothing.

Hi Shadowhippie - I now appreciate what your post was about I've just started a course to teach absolute beginners (including a class called Basic Skills- these people have difficulty in reading, writing and mathematics at the most basic level) about computing - The first lesson that beginners do is recognising the parts of a computer, this is the screen, this is the keyboard, this is the ON switch for the Screen, This is the ON switch for the computer. It wasn't until we started to try to explain the basics that I realised how much I took for granted - and when I had to tell a fellow course-mate (There to learn how to teach computing) the reason their computer hadn't come into life was because it wasn't plugged in! That I realised that even people who use computers every day rely heavily on the experts who keep the computer running and don't even think about how to switch it on!. Surely you know you have to switch the thing on! (NOT SO) Surely you know what a keyboard is (NOT SO) But haven't you read the instructions (Can't Read or Visually Impaired) Thank you again for interpreting the gobbledegook into plain english.

PictureVillage
I don't think Picture Village allows you to remotely-link to images which they store; it's more of an 'album' or 'picture gallery' service. This means that to view pictures stored on their servers, you have to go to a page on their site. For example, I have this picture stored there.
If you'll look at the page I've linked to, you'll notice there's a banner ad at the top of the page, which is how they make their revenue. Picture hosting services, on the other hand, won't make any money through adverts, as the images will be viewed on completely different parts of the internet.
As for picture-hosting, I'd personally recommend IOWNJOO and freepichosting.
