Where would we all be without Microsoft though? No other operating system seems to be able to offer enough to entice the masses away from it. I’d suspect that, even though other word processors and browsers have a strong following, Microsoft products are still the most popular. I guess this means Microsoft software can’t be all that bad. Other makes of software also give trouble …and probably not just because of the operating system it runs on. Having tried lots of software over the years I’m of the opinion that Microsoft products are pretty good. (OK ...you can start throwing the rocks at me now! )

TW- There is a difference - Microsoft is NOT the best product (at least to me ) - It is made the best product (OS) simply by default. I used to use Linux - sometime ago - Loved it,amazing in all respects and it's free; then came the problem - all the software (by other companies) were simply made for Microsoft -So one had to switch over! (I just heard that they reached an agreement on the Anti-trust case - going through the points.)

Hi again Sue,
The more I think about your 'webpage' question, the more confused I'm getting! I've a feeling that the answer is probably quite simple!!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you refer to 'text' documents, I believe that you're talking about an ordinary .doc document? To write a webpage in Notepad as a .txt file, you would need a good knowledge of the HTML 'language' and I'm assuming that's not what you mean. If it is, I can refer you to other text editors which make life simpler in HTML.
I think that your query probably relates more to page views. If you look at the bottom left hand corner of your screen (in Word 2000), you will see a row of four 'boxes' next to the bottom slider bar. Each has a little picture (the first one having three lines under each other) in it. If you hover your mouse over each in turn, you will see that they refer to the different types of 'page views' that you can use. I suspect that, when you open your .htm file, it automatically opens in the web view. If you click on the third 'box' from the left (print layout view), your document will appear like a regular document (just text/tables, etc). You can also use the 'View' drop down menu for this - the four different views are listed at the top of this menu.
The other thing you can do to view or not view 'code' in your document is to go to 'Tools', 'Options' and, on the 'View' tab, check/tick the 'View field codes' option. Also, if you're working with the forms toolbar, I'd strongly recommend that you change the option under this, 'Field shading', to 'Always' rather than the default 'When selected'. This makes it MUCH easier to see where you've placed a form field in your document.
Am I answering your question or am I barking up the wrong tree? Perhaps we need to break down the components of your question?? Let me know what you think please?
Cheers, ProofReader

Have you noticed that there is one already started? (see 'Microsoft versus the rest'). It is there to discuss the merits or drawbacks of operating systems and software, Microsoft or otherwise.
I suppose Microsoft products (which I personally like) will always crop up when talking about software since we all use it so much ...and often one thing does lead to another when discussing topics in a forum, just as it might in normal conversation. Let's not be too strict.
However, I did see the need to keep this thread on topic, which is somewhat why I started another one yesterday.
As far as I'm concerned, the word 'evil' can't be associated with software. You either like to use a particular piece of software or you don't.

I will print this out and try your suggestions, many thanks. As you say, some of us have Word forced upon us, we are told we MUST use it but as I have had problems I have shied away from it so far. I do type in html coding, I prefer to type it as I can keep it 'clean' and not have to search amongst lots of coding which is not really needed in order to edit my pages..... with well over a thousand pages to keep updated I can't waste any time.

Sue, I have baffled over your question regarding web pages in Word for several days and can't come up with a simple solution, I'm sorry.
I can't, for the life of me, imagine why anyone would use Word to create a web page when they can write in HTML directly in Notepad - except, of course, when their workplace is forcing them in this direction! I find Word very cumbersome when it comes to web content and so don't use it.
I'm afraid that I'm not going to be able to help you with this question. You have discovered my weak area in Word! I simply don't use Word for web content, I'm sorry.
As a related aside - have you ever heard of Textpad? It's a good text editor which has much more functionality than Notepad.
Sorry not to have a simple remedy for you.

No problems ProofReader and thanks for coming back. I carried out your suggestions of turning off the autocorrect options and I'm no longer troubled by numbers popping up when I don't want them too. Thanks. Now all I've got to do is remember to put the the envelope in the printer the right way round when I'm using the 'Envelopes and Labels' function. The number of envelopes I've had to throw away with the left-hand half of the address printed the wrong way round is quite high. The right-hand half of the address is just gets sprayed all over the insides of the printer I think.

Proofreader..I'm impressed with the envelope thing...as in several of my workplaces the measure of someone's getting by very well, was knowing how to get the printer to print correctly on envelopes.
One of my jobs was a slide librarianship and getting it to print on slide label stickers was hell on earth...each sheet was costly too! But it wasn't word it was a data base program.
As to the envelopes and the way in and out thing in general, I would put a post it on the machines that I shared...fax, photocopy, printer, so that people would see it. Ever sent a blank ten page fax to someone because it's the opposite of your home machine? Talk about sheepish! I have about three printers at home, they each have different setups so I prefer doing the labels and sticking them on.

Thank for trying that for me.
It was just the way I do things in WP, the webpages are a by-product of the pages that I print, by doing a 'save as', when placing the code I can see where bullets, tables and the like are. It works in WP, just not in Word, it saves me a lot of time and effort. I have tried working in Word for the printed articles and then in Wordpad/Notepad but I lose the formatting before I want to.

I tried to download the software, it corrupted - I will try again later. Thank you.
I have now managed to download it, I will have a look at it to see if it would be helpful.

Thanks for the Textpad tip! I was doing an assignment in Italian and didn't have a spell check for Word. I downloaded the Italian version of Textpad and it works great!
