Well I don't know about where you are, but over here in the UK the cold weather is starting.

What books do you love for winters evenings, it's cold outside (might even be a wind howling or snow falling) and you are all snuggled up with a drink of your choice and a good book?

Personally I would nominate most of Charles Dickens work as it is so descriptive you can really get lost in your own little world in the armchair. For some reason his books don't work as well for me in the summer months!

Flapjack, you couldn't have picked a better time to curl up with a Dickens. Jazz has suggested an FT book club circle and we are going to make a start on "Pickwick Papers". It would be great if you could join us.

Read through the thread about the Book of the Month Club here, and about the first book selection here.

Winter is the season when I like to get engrossed in the weighty tomes-the longer the better. During the summer months I like to read short novels or stories(I always feel guilty about sneaking off to bed with a book when it's still light outside-just can't settle!)
At present I am reading a very unusual book(515 pages) by Lauren Belfer called City of Lights. It's all about the introduction of electricity to the U.S.A. from Niagara Falls.
There are many sub-plots in the story which I just couldn't take the time to think about at other times of year.I would be thinking that I should be out in the garden or cleaning the house!

mmm.... snug with a cup of steaming tea and a great big book to keep you happy! The funniest thing is I decided the other day to start reading a book called 'Britain - Then and Now' which is a chunky history book with plenty of photographs about how people used to live. I sit with that, surrounded by maps and other local history books so I can cross reference, and if I have been there (or indeed live there) I try to work out exactly which buildings are still there etc. Then of course I get wrapped up in warm clothes at the next opportunity to go and see the place!

Could someone pass me the buttered crumpets now?

At this time of year, well, all winter, I read everything I can get my hands on. I love curling up with a cup of hot tea and a good book, or soaking in a hot bubble bath with a book. Reading is my favorite winter sport! This winter, my main reading will be whatever the book of the month is here at FT, although I will be reading other books simultaneously. I usually have abot 4 or 5 books going at a time.

I did try reading in the bath but the books got soggy when I turned the pages! Also my arms would ache becuase I had to hold the book open!!! Winter is great isn't it? I have just decided to join the library down the road, it's tiny but it might have some good books....

Last night we had our first frost in the mountains here, and usually I chase the cold by reading History and Myster Right now, though, I'm in the middle of Pickwick Papers. That should keep me nicely occupied for the next little while.

I am now stealthily reading books and writing down ideas for questions so I can do quizzes!!

You had all better do them when they are up and running!
Just kidding........

In addition to reading "The Pickwick Papers", for the FT book of the month club, I have started reading "The Mists of Avalon". My brother highly recommended it, and so far I am really enjoying it. Between the two, I am curled up snug on the couch quite a bit, which is a good thing, because it is getting colder here. We had a couple days where it warmed up, but today it turned downright bitter, and we have a chance of snow Monday and Tuesday. I hope so, because that will make for some great reading!
