Hi! I went through the posts and I noticed that there weren't any posts for old films. When I say old they MUST be at least 25 years old.

Some of mine are:
His Girl Friday 1940
Dracula 1931
Singing in the Rain 1952
Phanton of the Opera 1925 and 1943
Citizen Kane 1941

I could go on...but I'd like to hear YOUR favorites.

anything with Jimmy Stewart
Gone With the Wind

I am sure there are more, but I am drawing a blank right now.

Ah, Jimmy and Audrey. Gotta love 'em! For me, it's anything Vincent Price and Bela Lugosi--well, except for those Ed Wood films. Then there's Uncle Boris too--also George Sanders. Love that voice!

The old films are, of course, the best, and I started doing a list of my favourites (Gone with the Wind, Spartacus, Bad Day at Black Rock, It's a Wonderful Life), before I realised that you only set the limit at 25 years. Amazingly, this brings in films like Jaws and Star Wars. I feel old.

Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman is a masterpiece and one of the most underappreciated movies of all time. I also like Adam's Rib with Spencer Tracy and Kathryn Hepburn.

Almost easy as there are quite a few, but firstly:

Random Harvest - so much so I wrote a quiz on it - oh here's a link! http://www.funtrivia.com/quizdetails.cfm?id=71865

And secondly

An Affair to Remember - not another one I wrote a quiz on! - a link = oh OK! - http://www.funtrivia.com/quizdetails.cfm?id=64114

I also really love White Christams, The Lemon Drop Kid and High Society so any quizzes on those please write them now!

The Thin Man and sequels - never seen a detective pair funnier than Wm Powell and Myrna Loy.

Alec Guinness's Kind Hearts and Coronets and Cary Grant's Arsenic and Old Lace: oh so dark, oh so funny.

This is a great thread! However, what are we classifying as "old?" I'm 26 so old for me is different than others. Are we talking pre-colour films here or what? Well here's some oldies from many different eras that I love. . .

Singin' In The Rain
The List Of Adrian Messenger
Casablanca
Dracula
Twelve Angry Men
The Guns of Navarone
A Bridge Too Far

They're excellent films, Vanyar. Simply any film that came out before 1975. The reason it is 1975 is because Young Frankenstein is one of my favorites. I think our definition of old is the same--being as I am 21.

Some of my favorites that I haven't mentioned yet are:
Der Golem (1922)
Nosferatu (1922)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)

So when I say old, I mean it!!!

I would think of post 1975 as being recent releases

A brief encounter
The early Bond films - Sean Connery only
The parent trap
Bridge over the River Kwai
The great escape
Battle of Britain

Love story

I love old movies -- they're the closest thing to reliving history. Here are some of my favorites, dating prior to 1970. Many are a bit obscure, but I guarantee quite entertaining:

--"Safety Last" with Harold Lloyd (silent)
--Tod Browning's "Freaks" - one of the 1st talkies - with real freaks -- this movie could never get made today
--"Alice in Wonderland" with W.C. Fields
--"Adventure" with Clark Gable and Greer Garson
--"The Big Street" with Lucille Ball
--"Out of the Past" with Robert Mitchum
--"I Remember Mama" with Irene Dunne
--"Blackbeard the Pirate" with Linda Darnell
--"Madonna of the Seven Moons" with Stewart Grainger
--"The Bad Seed"
--"The Day the Earth Stood Still" - (klaatu, barada, nickto)
--"Burn Witch Burn" - based on Fritz Lieber's "Conjure Wife"
--"The Moon and Sixpence" with George Sanders
--"Anne of the Thousand Days" with Richard Burton
--"On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" with Barbra Streisand
--"The Party" with Peter Sellers
--"The Loved One" with Jonathan Winters and Robert Morse
--"Save the Tiger" with Eli Wallach

Just a question of idle curiosity Pearl, which Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde??? There are three versions. The silent 1920 version with John Barrymore, the 1932 version with Frederic March (that won him an oscar) and the 1943 version with Spencer Tracy--my favorite one out of the three.

And I MUST see Murder on the Orient Express!!! Everyone has it on their list!

Did anyone see the new TV version of Doctor Zhivago this week? (in the UK that is.) It was ok, but it made me think about how it compared to the original. I (re)watched the film this evening, and I really think it is fantastic. Such a classic. Julie Christie, Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger, Tom Courtenay, how can you remake such a perfect film?

I also love To Kill a Mockingbird, that's a great version of a wonderful book.

What else?... Billy Liar, that's a wonderful film too, another Tom Courtenay classic.

Has anyone else seen the movie "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte" with Bette Davis and Olivia DeHavilland? My Mom and I watched last week...it's a movie that makes you sit on the edge of your seat and peek out from behind your sleeve.....at least that's what it did for me!

Yes, I've seen Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte too. It's an incredible movie. I've always been a fan of Joseph Cotten, and he does a great job in this one. And Bette Davis? WOW!! Great job too. If you like that one, let me ask you: have you ever seen 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' AWESOME!!!!
