I'm in the process of researching a new quiz on the sister ships of "Titanic" and one of the tidbits I found was that when the sister ship "Olympic" was retired in 1937 many of the ornate wooden carvings were sold to fine hotels and restaurants. The "Olympic" had very similar interiors as "Titanic," including two grand staircases. The White Swan Hotel in Alnwick, England has several wood carvings from the "Olympic." Has anyone ever been there and seen them?

I haven't seen them in situ personally Root, but I found the Euronet website showing some of the carvings from the Olympic which went to the hotel you have mentioned. Here's a Google image page for The White Swan Hotel too. You may have found these websites during your research already though. Good luck with your quiz!!

Funny how I just watched this TV show on the Titanic, Olympic and Brittanic the other day!

Yeah - what happened was in the 1930s, when White Star and Cunard merged they decided the Olympic was unprofitable. So they sold the ship as scrap and the furnishings at auction. Except most of the furnishings didn't sell because no one wanted something that looked like it came from their grandmother's house! But the White Swam hotel bought up a bunch of the stuff - including the wood staircase and wood panelled rooms... They showed some footage from the hotel and it's neat!

I'm going to move this thread to somewhere where you might have a better response.

Izzi, thanks for the links. I was aware of one of them but not the other.
