"Name all of the plants in the Milky Way, in size order smallest to largest, including their moons, distance from the sun, discoverer, what their name means, and gasses in their atmosphere. Also include average temperature in kelivin."

Think that would be accepted?

"Say the alphabet backwards."

"What are the lyrics to 'The Star Spangled Banner?'"

"Answer this question, without typing, in Manderian Chinese."

Isn't one of the worst answers to have - in FITB or in multiple choice - 'Nan'

Because in computer language NAN means Not A Number and the system will not accept it as an answer and marks it wrong. It then tells you the right answer is Nan.

I remember this causing a get deal of problem in a quiz about the time I joined Funtrivia. It took a while to work out why the answer was being marked as wrong. I cannot remember what the question was however.

I had someone submit a quiz to me that had ten word FITBS only and the players were to carefully type in the exact statement in a game for advancing each level, punctuation included as there were contractions, then, I put my glasses on and saw they'd even put a period at the end of each sentence!

What I'm seeing lately is people giving exact instructions on how to match exactly what they're dreaming up and then assuming that's sufficient for the poor player to get the answer. They also assume that it's the player's fault for not reading their elaborate instructions very carefully. Elaborate instructions in the clue area on 'mind your spelling' or 'make sure you put in the apostrophe' aside, it would give you the chance of a:

SNOWBALL IN HELL&snwball n hell&snowball in hell&snoball in hail

I had one person recently who disagreed with only allowing the correct spelling of a name as a fill in the blank answer. Their reasoning was that the real spelling is never shown in the actual show and this wasn't a spelling test type of quiz.

However, I had to point out there are numerous official sites with the correct spelling (and that's why the quizzes aren't timed, so you can look it up). Also, (using an example here) Jenn is not the name of the woman, Jen is. Therefore, saying that Jenn rode her bicyle is wrong because it was actually Jen who did so.

Another thing I'd like to point out is for quizzes already online. Sometimes, a FITB question isn't working as fewer than 10-15% of the players are getting it wrong. This is the perfect sign that your FITB question is either too tricky or just plain too hard and should be switched to T/F/Y/N or multiple choice. Even though it may be perfectly formed as a fill in the blank question, such low 'correctness' scores shows that something's going on there that you may not be aware of.
