Hi, I was listening to Shakira in the car with my kids, I'm starting to think she'll be around longer than some of the divas, I mean, she's so versatile...lest I be taken for someone spamming by Copago here, what do you think about her? I mean even if you don't like her voice particularly, from an objective viewpoint, I think she's going to be around to stay, I really like the Latin, Lebanese and other influences...and also she could sing country with the best of them, she has the timbre. Never thought I'd say it...any new divas you've noticed?

Yes, I have notice new divas making themselves a name in the music business. One of my favorites is Ashanti. She makes me think of her as Aaliyah. But she will never take Aaliyah's place. There is a breakthrough of divas out there and Shakira and Kylie Minogue are another ones.

I must say I agree that Shakira is a true talent. It is refreshing hear somone singing using their true voice as so many singers sing in that uniform way that is implanted in most of us through listening to too much repetitive bad pop. This lady seems to have discovered her voice and uses it well. I am also impressed these days by Alicia Keys. She has got that lovely gospel sound to her voice that so many try to achieve but come short of the mark. Ms. Dynamite also has a good voice but more impressive are her amazing lyrics and the fact that she has created a musical style all of her own.

Good ones, I was winding down my day yesterday after listening to the tape my daughter had in the car, so couldn't think of others. Alicia Keyes, she's good...I mean I just hope that she'll keep it up. That they won't force her into a mold. Shakira, when you listen to some of her stuff, you can imagine her being able to carry on throughout five sets and never lose her energy. Plus, you have to admit that next to her really gorgeous looks, Britney looks as bland as plain vanilla ice cream. (I actually admire Britney for being a kid star and evolving though, don't get me wrong.) The Middle Eastern stuff is really written into her songs with art. And the end effect of Shakira's work is a true voice. You know if you had her sing country songs, her voice would work very well...Dolly Parton, another singer whose voice I particularly enjoy, has this sort of voice too. Rondstadt etc.
And the music itself, isn't just a poor excuse for backup.
Now, Alicia Keyes, that woman is a gospel singer...you can feel it.
Aliyah, I know that I enjoyed her too...sad end to a budding career though. Anyone heard Diana Krall's hits? She's revamping the old arrangments and whoa, if you like the older show tunes, the woman is sultry...she looks like Elvis too...wonder if she's not another daughter? Just kidding, don't want the Elvis fans shooting me down here. But what a lovely lower voice... plus she plays the piano, well, check her out.
I'm starting to sound like spam, aren't I? Nope, never.
Others I'm thinking of are Shania Twain, I like her playful lyrics, her country sound that blends into pop well.
Now, not sure if I'll survive this, but Alanis, well, she drives me up a wall, I just cannot abide her voice and her lyrics, and wonder how she actually manages to get a date as the man must know he'll end up sprawling in a song some day! I don't know whether one might call her a diva. I can respect her as an artist, but I just don't care for her voice. Joni Mitchell was the first person to have this sort of style a long long time ago...so the newer ones don't really impress me.
Mariah...she's still kicking, but don't know if she'll ever climb back up there. Yes, I've defended Mariah despite Superfurryanimal's chipmunk nose remark...and he shouldn't have talked with a screenanme like his, should he? If SFA is still popping in, I'm sure he'll have something to say about the divas.
Anyone else you think is going to resist time like Madonna?

Interesting to note that Kylie is classed with the 'new' singers. She's been popping out hits in Australia and England since 1987! (And she used to be known as the 'Singing Budgie' here because she wasn't regarded as much of a singer at all!) Another of the same vintage, who's just a fairly recent addition to the international ranks, is Tina Arena. Tina can sing pretty much anything, and has such a powerful, soulful voice. Oh, and Heather, I'm no big fan of her's, but I'm quite partial to vanilla ice cream!

I hadn't heard of Diana Krall over here until last week when she was on the Royal Variety Performance and performed a duet with Natalie Cole. I love Natalie and their voice blended and contrasted in the way that makes duets worth listening to. I do hate the way that two singers get together to perform duets based only on the fact that they are both big names and not because their voices have been considered. I did enjoy Diana (or is it Diane) and loved her sultry sound. There are too many people today that consider a woman to be a good singer provided she can sing notes only dogs can hear her ability to perform vocal gymnastics. A simple melody sung well in a lovely deep timbre will do me nicely thank you very much (not that I don't enjoy a good soprano sound)!

Just listened to another CD, Krall is singing Nat King Cole tunes, really nice. She plays the piano too, so, that's not exactly a piece of cake.

Now we're really talking Diva! Of course. I guess I'm just not an opera buff, so I was thinking about the ones we think might be flashes in the pan and aren't. Plus I'm told that my favorite singer Bocelli, isn't really an opera singer...and I don't care...cause I like him, so there!

I guess the term 'Diva' has evolved a bit. I mean technically it refers to the dames of opera but these days it seems to mostly refers to women in music of notable talent. Then there is also the whole thing about Diva refering to how demanding a female performer is. The likes of Jennifer Lopez demanding entire suites of top class, historical hotels be painted white and Mariah Carey demanding puppies to play with on TV appearances seems to constitute Diva in that vein. Anyway in the spirit of thread being about flash in the pan versus longevity Jennifer Lopez NO - Shakira YES Mariah Carey NO - Kiri Te Kanawa YES Britney OH PLEASE - Anyone else AT LEAST A HOPE
PS I don't care what anyone says I like Bocelli

I didn't know J Lo was that picky, I do like that latest hit though, I mean it's kind of cute.
I'm thinking it takes a special kind of person to last the years, by the way, I find that Tina Turner has got a lot of life in her, Cher, well, I admire her too, after all, she's never lied about getting massive plastic surgery and all that... Dolly Parton, well, I just love that gal...really do. She's got a lot of class...
