Wow, maybe I'm out of touch (well, I am over 40!) BUT... in the latest UK number one by Nelly and Kelly, Kelly sings 'even when I'm with my boo, I'm still in love with you'.
Well, I hope I'm not referring to something disgusting, but I have NO IDEA what she's singing about. Please translate who my boo actually is.

Also, in the North of England calling a man a Nelly is not very complimentary. And in the states, I doubt Nelly is a man's name either!

Hey Satguru!

A "boo" is a term of endearment. My honey, my sweetie, my boo... personally I think the word is dumb, but a lot of people use it.

Dear Farie, thanks for the quick answer- this implies Kelly has someone else in the background and still thinks about Nelly when she's with him- naughty girl!

This would also make Nelly a real Nelly, or Wally as we say in London.

I took it as being "beau", meaning boyfriend, but she had to say it to sound like "boo" to rhyme with the song. Of course, I only listen to it when my nieces are around, because that really isn't the kind of music I am into.

They're right about boo, but Nelly is short for I think Cornwall, you can see why he would want to shorten it.

And I decided to find out next door on Ask FT, close, it's Cornell Haynes jr., so makes perfect sense, if a little odd to our ears, to use Nelly.
