I am SOsick of sports programs pre-empting my favourite shows!

Last night they delayed a brand new episode of The Simpsons for a stupid football game. And after the game ran late, they still showed the post-game show instead of putting on the scheduled programming! There is no way to describe how absolutely pissed off I am that they keep sports games on the air after their scheduled time is up.

No no no, what is worse is when they do go to the scheduled program and miss the end of a game of any sort. That's what our station did a few years ago when we missed the last hour of a Ashes test match. I was ropeable!

They did the same thing here when they interrupted the end of a very close football game to show the movie "Heidi". That was several years ago and the station is still getting flack about that one. I bet it won't happen again!

Never mess with a man's sports or his remote.

Just to clarify, this football match that got the new Simpsons episode postponed, was it:

a) Rugby union: A magnificent game what is your problem?
b) Association, rugby league, gaelic or Victorian: What a terrible thing for the TV station to do to you!
c) Grid-iron, either sort: How uspeakably awful of the TV station clearly an offence against your human rights.

These distinctions matter to a bloke even a profound sports hater like myself.

Still look on the bright side it could be worse, if you lived in Oz or NZ you might have been stuck with Cricket. Over here if you got Cricket I would consider you lucky it is more likely to be Darts or Snooker.

"Several" years ago, DH? You're making me feel good. The "Heidi" game was played when I was in 7th grade, and I'm 45 now! 11/17/68; Oakland scored two touchdowns in the last 9 seconds to come from behind to beat the Jets 42-32.

Coolupway - don't be dissin' the curling!

(Seriously I hate sport on the telly as a general rule, but one of the few exceptions is curling. Especially curling after several quick coffee and tim tams.... )

I have to jump in on the side of those who hate programming interrupted for sports. There are very few teams I root for (All sports combined, there are about 4 teams I like - and that is college and professional added together) and I am content with getting the scores from the newspaper.

Wow, was "Heidi" that long ago? Oh well, I've never been accused of having a good memory.

I can honestly say that I dont see an episode of The Simpsons making more money than a NFL playoff game. No way in hell are they going to cut off a game watched by millions of people to show the 367 th episode of the Simpsons or any other sitcom, drama, or "reality show" when they have what are called re-runs. The majority of people I think can hold off 15 min. to see who is going to get booted off the island or who is NOT being funny in the newest "HIT" sitcom.

You know "The Simpsons" has reached the end of the line when REAP groans at seeing them pop up on the small screen!

Exactly. They should have stopped it 3 seasons ago. They ran out of funny ideas and started putting out the "Worst episode ever!" every week.

You know, I have a good way to fix this problem - Football and basketball games ALWAYS run over. Why not schedule MORE TIME for them? I can't tell you how many times I set the VCR to record something and when I got home a football game was on my tape so I missed my program! If they schedule more time and the game doesn't go as long, stations always have 'filler' shows like MASH and Frasier that they can show.

LadyCait - I was waiting for a show that night too - Malcolm in the Middle. Mom and I kept flipping back to Fox until the show was on. Did you see the end of the game? They started interviewing players and THEN went to the post-game? Couldn't that have been part of the post-game show?

I was thinking that, too. The whole thing isn't as bad as it used to be, though. At least now they just delay the shows, rather than returning to them "already in progress...".

I think the part that bugs me the most is that I have paid for cable television to be able to watch these shows, and as a paying customer, I don't see why my shows need to be interrupted by some silly guys running up and down a field in spandex tights. If people are so desperate to watch that crap, they can turn to ESPN.

I do far more reading than TV watching. That is why I bomb so bad in the TV section over in Quizzyland. I can't tell you who the characters are on most shows, and I stand there in confusion when people are discussing the great new shows because I haven't seen or even heard of most of them.

All of this well be over soon enough and you will be able to watch whatever you want whenever you want. Cable companies, like mine, have been coming out with things like HBO on Demand. If you want to watch any Sopranos or 6 Feet Under all you have to do is click on the episode you want to watch and its on. You can also pause it anytime you want. I was thinking about getting that perfect TV thing where you can pause any program and start it when you want including live events such as the NFL playoffs and tape another show while your watching it, but I don't think there is that much stuff on TV that I want to watch.

Wow, they can do that already, Reap? I remember hearing that it will be possible to choose what angle you watch different sports from ... you might like a close up/ way back/ from behind the try line/ half way and so on ... you could choose your own.

Sorry, no sympathy for you non sport people. I'll happily watch a re-run of Guatemala v Tonga from the 1961 Rugby World Cup before most things.

You know they didn't throw to the 6 o’clock news until 6.50 the other night because the Aussie/England cricket test was rather exciting and ran overtime. Now this is a game that is played over five days! Bet you liked that one Copago ! It was live and thrilling. What news did we miss? The Dow Jones rudely fluctuated in public again, and the Panda that can't get an erection is diagnosed as allergic to bamboo.. awwwww.
