An independent study from 1996 has been released and reveals that an estimated forty percent of the nuns in the U.S. have been sexually abused by a priest or another nun and the researchers say that figure is an underestimation.

Sad Sad Sad. Where will it all end? I wonder if the Catholic church will ever be able to recover from all this scandal. What is ready sad is that the whole Catholic faith is suffering because of the actions of some.

So all those bad 70s smutty films about naughty Lesbian goings on in the Convents were actually factual programmes. I knew there was a good reason for watching them.

On a serious note I have very little sympathy for RC nuns as a group. I also note that on being interviewed about monkey business with other nuns or priests the interviewee may be more likely to compound her sins by telling a porkie than admiting the act(s) is/were consensual. Nuns have aided and abetted the Church in many of its more extreme exercises in social control over the last hundred years. For example the forcible migration of orphans and children in thier care to the dominions where most were treated very badly. Institutionalisation of single mothers and promiscuious girls in Eire. Suppression of native languages. It is a long list of sins. It is hard to feel any compassion for this group.

I suggest that anyone who has any sympathy for this group what so ever should listen to the Joni Mitchell song "Magdelane Laundries" on the new Chieftains album and see how you feel after that.
