It's not that new anymore, but one of the latest CDs I have bought, which is several weeks ago now (guess I don't shop that often) is Peace Songs. Interesting covers of old songs with new artists - looks like everything old is new again.

Avril Lavigne covering Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is far and away the best track. Our Lady Peace covering John Lennon's "Imagine" is an interesting second.

Here is a link to the track listing and samples. I am not sure if this is considered advertising, but hope it is allowed as this is a charity album. http://sonymusic.ca/PeaceSongs/tracks.html

I had a birthday recently and this is what I got:

40 Licks - The Rolling Stones
Let it Bleed - The Rolling Stones
A Quick One - The Who
Imagine - John Lennon
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Aqualung - Jethro Tull

I also got Tommy by the Who recently.
As you can see I've just begun my exploration of classic rock

I just bought:

John Mayer, "Heavier Things"
The Misfits "Project 1950"
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes "Take a Break"
Ben Harper "Diamonds on the Inside" and
Joe Jackson "Joe Jackson's Greatest Hits."

Now, if I could just find the time to listen to all of them, I'd be in good shape.

Some recent good cd finds-

A used copy of the first Be Good Tonyas cd. Their music is a mix of folk, blues and alternative-country. Quite a nice old-timey feel to their sound but not a forced retro vibe.

Bought some really excellent soul/R&B various artists compilations lately. "Vampi Soul", "Westbound Funk", "Fatback's Soul Shop" "Country Got Funk" and
the stand-out "Soulin' Vol. 2". Most of the songs are from
the 70's, most of the artists only released a few singles in their career but a big tip of the hat to the compliers of these
cd's for finding and releasing these excellent tunes!

Also purchased the latest Neil Young (Greendale) and two older Neil's(On The Beach and American Stars'N'Bars) just released on cd for the first time.

Loved the new Kings Of Leon (the southern USA version of the Strokes?) but a little put-off that the full length debut is nothing more than their previously released ep with a few additional songs. Also enjoyed Ten Benson's debut record. Ten Benson is said to be compared to a mix of the Strokes and ZZ Top or The Hives meet Black Oak Arkansas.
Ah, so now the critics decide that meeting Black Oak Arkansas can result in a good thing. Tsk tsk!

Joss Stone "The Soul Sessions" A 16 years of age white UK girl releases the best soul album since the '70s. Her voice is
absolutely amazing and her interpretations of soul standards
such as "The Chokin' Kind" and "All the King's Men" are chilling. There's a sense of believability here in the covering of these tunes that I hadn't expected. She reworks "For the Love of You" into a slower gorgeous ballad and her cover of the White Stripes "Fell In Love with A Boy" deserves to recieve
radio airplay- I think it's much better than the original (this from a major White Stripes fan). Though this is an all covers record, I feel like I'm hearing many of these songs for the first time, thanks to the singer and all the contributing guests (soul artists such as Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas, Benny Latimore, etc). From what I've read, this cd was just a detour to Stone's real debut album- something in the vein of Britney Spears. Say it isn't so, Joss!

Oh, I love Justin Timberlake's newest song, Signorita. I love the part in it where he says "ok, we're gonna try something new this time, they don't do this anymore, but the guys say: It feels like something's heating up, can I leave wich you? and then the girls say: I don't know what I'm thinking of, but I'm leaving wich you..."
I love the girlie voice he puts on in it.
I also like Beyonce, R Kelly, Eminem (i love hime!!!), Sean Paul, Match Box 20, Black Eyed Peas, Shakaya, Christina Aguleara, and all of the other's who have made it onto the charts.
I also like a bit of Country rock and classical, musical tunes from older movies such as: the inspector general or kiss me kate.
R n B is alright too. Amanda Perez and Alicia Keys are good too.

Really love the new Al Green cd, "I Can't Stop". If you're a fan of his '70s soul classics, then you should enjoy this album. Every song's a winner for me.

I also like Ryan (that's Ryan not Bryan) Adam's new "Rock N Roll" cd. Also enjoyed Sting's latest album, "Sacred Love", and Dido's "Life for Rent".

Neil Young fans may want to check out My Morning Jacket's "It Still Moves" cd. A couple more good alternative rock albums I liked are "Chutes Too Narrow" by the Shins and "Logic Will Break Your Heart" by the Stills. The Still record took awhile to grow on me but now it's taking hold.

Another great, destined-to-be-a-classic soul cd is "Heroine" by Kelli Sae. It's a perfect album, no weak tracks.

I generally don't buy CDs because I like listening to the radio, but my newest purchase was the latest Matchbox 20 CD, More Than You Think You Are. I really like the songs, and it is even rivaling my John Mayer CD (Room for Squares) for time spent in my CD player!

I like the latest cd by Air. All the vocals on this cd is theirs, this time around.

Two power pop cds I recommend- "45 & 33" by the Blank Pages (Rubber Soul-era Beatles-ish tunes) and "Unrequited Hits" by the Returnables (power punk-ish pop). Not Lame & cdbaby.com sites sell these and many more great sounds.

For a change of pace, if you love the country/hillbilly sounds of the old '78s, try the V/A comp, "Down In the Basement". Joe Bussard complied these for the cd, he's a well known collector of '78s and this comp is excellent. May he release many more of these! A companion collection to this record may well be R.Crumb's "Hot Women". More '78s, all female vocalists, from all over the world. R. Crumb does the art work, naturally.

Also, first time on cd is a collection of The Mummies, the world's wackiest punksters. "Death By Unga Bunga" on Estrus records should be a chart topping hit, in a better world that is.

Australian punk and punk pop collection- "Antipodean Screams". As far as I know, it's all real recent tunes. This is real music at it's most real! It's also available at Not Lame along with other great Aussie recordings. So what's in the water down under that produces such outstanding music so often?

I buy mostly old school rock stuff, so get ready for a trip through the past. >_>

Ummagumma by Pink Floyd
-This is an incredible double disc set. It's very early Floyd (it was released in 1969), but it is an incredible album, nonetheless.

Untitled (Led Zeppelin IV) by Led Zeppelin
-This is Zeppelin at their very best. If I only get one Zep album in my life, I'm glad it's this one.

Suprisingly, those are the only albuums I've purchased in a couple of months.
