The new CD's I bought during the last week or two:

Desert Sessions 9 & 10 - Well since all desert sessions are written and recorded in a few days there's some incredible songs and some not so great ones, but overall I like this album. Josh Homme and PJ Harvey sound great together on Crawl Home.

The Distillers - Sing Sing Death House. It gets a bit repetitive after a while, not bad though.

I also bought CD's by Nebula and Turbonegro yesterday, but I haven't listened to them yet

Some recent goodies- "Bounce" by Too Many Crooks, a UK ska band. Great danceable, Toasters-like traditional ska with a dash of punk attitude tossed in.

"Messy Century" by the Mountaineers. Nice mix of folk and electronics. More loose than Air, more fun than the Books.

Jazz-funkster Roy Ayers latest compilation, "Virgin Ubiquity", is a collection of previously unreleased tunes from the late '70s-early '80s. Some songs here have been released before as sung by Roy but the versions here, as well as all the unreleased songs, are sung by female vocalists. This cd and the Roy Ayers anthology on Polydor records are excellent places to begin to discover this great artist.

Recommended if you like Belle & Sebastian- James Kirk's "You Can Make It If You Boogie". A little more upbeat than Belle & Sebastian and worth hunting for (bought mine at twee kitten records' online shop).

"Seventeen Jewels" by the Blazers, a great album for those who like Latin/roots rock a la Los Lobos.

Some cool rockabilly I recommend is "The Lost Weekend" by the Hi-Risers of upstate New York. Well worth the wait after CD Universe tracked a copy down.

I also like new releases from Jet (their only release?), Norah Jones and the Von Bondies (though I still prefer Norah's and the Von Bondies' first major label releases over the newest stuff).

Favorite latest "alternative" cd- "Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes" from TV On the Radio (a nice mix of alternative, reggae and do-wop). Favorite latest garage rock reissue- "Psycho-sonic" by the Sonics (fantastic sounding UK release, the definitive Sonics compilation, so far).

I was hoping to read someone's opinion on the new Jet CD. I've been wanting to buy it, but I hadn't heard much about it. Thanks Rogue.

Can I send you hate mail if I don't like it?

Well, first listen to some song samples or downloads before buying.

Also check out the All Music Guide's review of Jet's cd (this is what first prompted me to want to buy the cd)-

If you still hate it after buying it, sure, send some hate mail. But if you like it, I'll be looking forward to some fan mail!

Ok, I also have a question...and it may indeed be the question that seperates me from the rest of FT for the rest of my natural born...

...but has anyone bought the "Eagles of Death Metal" cd yet ?

Ok, Rogue. Fan mail time for you my friend. I bought Jet's CD last night and I'm really enjoying it. Roll Over DJ is a great song, I've adopted "Cold Hard...." as my new anthem and I'm enjoying the others songs quite a bit.

I also bought A Crow Left of the Murder by Incubus, it's good as well. I haven't listened all the way through yet, so I can't comment too much on it.

Tanzen, I haven't heard of that CD. Would you care to describe it a bit, it sounds interesting.

Glad you liked the Jet cd, Indie, and I'm happy not to have recieved any hate mail

Tanzen, how is the Eagles of Death Metal cd? All I've heard about it is that it's a side project of one of the members of Queens of the Stone Age.

I live in England and as a result I haven't been able to buy the Eagles of Death Metal CD yet. I have heard the bootleg off their site though and I love it. I can't wait until the CD comes out here .

Eagles of Death Metal is a side project for Josh from Queens of the Stone Age...he drums in this band

(he's a redhead and a drummer...he the closest I've come to a human equivalnet of Animal from the Muppets )

I don't know how you'd describe it...it's got a bit of an 80's feel to it...very slick...very fun...

(and the leads singer is a redhead as well )

I haven't visited this site in a long time, I'm thrilled to see this thread still alive.

SillyLily-I still haven't seen The Slaughter Rule. It's one of those I meant to go see and never did.

Rogue-I love the Robert Randolph cd! I don't even remember how I stumbled upon them, but it's such a fun sound. I also love Joss Stone's voice. I look forward to hearing her own work and not covers. Have you checked out the "Love Is Hell, Part 1 & 2" by Ryan Adams? I like 'em. I still think "Heartbreaker" is his best work ever, but none of his stuff is bad.

Tyrailia-I like Lucinda Williams cd. I've never been a huge fan of hers but bought her latest on a whim and was really surprised by how much I liked it.

If you don't own it (or worship it) already, I HIGHLY recommend Damien Rice's "O". The best cd of last year by far. I'm embarrassed by how many times I've listened to this cd. It's beautiful and heartbreaking and just perfect.

Cahyay- Glad to see another Ryan Adams fan here. I have both the "Love Is Hell" ep's and enjoy them equally (well, maybe Pt 2 a little more over the first ep). Thanks for creating a great thread.

Two highly recommended singer/songwriter cd's- Ron Sexsmith's "Retriever" and Iron & Wine's "Our Endless Numbered Days". Sexsmith's newest reminds me of Paul McCartney's acoustic soundalike, Emitt Rhodes. I guess this cd would be recommended to fans of Aimee Mann and the pop side of Wilco. Iron & Wine is lo-fi, alternative-folk rock to my ears. Excellent lyrics, somewhat comparable to Woven Hand.

For any fans of bossa nova, check out the various artists series, "Bossa Nova- Exciting Jazz Samba Rhythms". These are compiled of tracks mostly from the 1960's to early 1970's. A great mix of Brazilian and American artists, I can't recommend this series enough.

Are "My Winding Wheel" and "Come Pick me up" on the "Love is Hell" EP's? I love both of those songs. I've just recently developed a taste for Ryan Adams and I don't own any of his CD's yet. Which would be a good first purchase?

Thanks in advance.

Indie- Those two songs are both from his "Heartbreaker" cd. That's his first solo album away from Whiskeytown. Since you like those songs, that's a good cd to begin with. It's somewhat in the vein of the latter Whiskeytown material. Personally I liked his "Gold" cd best. It's more rock, less downbeat though I know the die-hard Whiskeytown fans hated that album as the music sounded very much like '70s classic rock ("New York New York" is on this cd). His "Rock N Roll" cd is more similiar to "Gold" in style while the "Love Is Hell" eps can be likened to the "Heartbreaker" album. Sometime this spring or summer, the 2 ep's will be sold as one cd, so that might be the second best place to start after "Heartbreaker".

I think I'll go with "Heartbreaker" first. I've read mixed reviews about "Rock N' Roll", so I may wait to get that one.

Thanks for your advice again, you may become my musical advisor soon

I just got Sugarcult's "Start Static". Pretty good. I want to get Mindy Smith's CD now though.

Cahyay- I finally saw "The Slaughter Rule" (I had to buy it off the internet though. Something I've never done before)When the Sundance Channel had it's "free weekend" or whatever that was one of the movies it played. My sister came running into my room,"Ryan Gosling's on channel 52!" ANYway, long story short I saw the ending, thought it was good so I bought the movie. It was OK. Ryan Gosling's great in it and David Morse is totally creepy...which is great. But I'm babbling now,so I'll stop.

I had to check out the hype on Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose" and it is excellent. Produced by and featuring Jack White as well as members of The Greenhornes (a Cincinnati garage rock band). I love Loretta & Jack's duet on "Portland Oregon". Her voice is amazing throughout the cd, stronger and more raw than I would have expected. Some really great songwriting from Lynn, though if White produces her next album, I hope she sings a White Stripes tune.

Two great cd's from electronic indie rock bands- Modest Mouse "Good News For People Who Love Bad News" and Beta Band "Heroes To Zeros". I think these are the best and most accessible records from these bands. If it isn't on the radio already, "Float On" by Modest Mouse is one of the best radio-friendly songs I've heard this year. The Beta Band rock it more this time around and it's a much better cd lyrically than their past releases, which may not set well with their long time fans but oh well.

I got the Eagles of Death Metal cd and it's great, more Eagles than Death Metal but some fun tongue-in-cheek tunes.

One of the year's best cd's so far- "Our Endless Numbered Days" by Iron & Wine. Folk/alternative folk/indie singer-songwriter- hard to put a label on this music. Their last record was almost like goth folk (!) but this new album is less brooding. Recommended if you like 16 Horsepower, Woven Hand, and Sufjan Stevens.

Reigning Sound's latest, "Too Much Guitar", lives up to that title. The vocals may be somewhat buried but it's still an awesome garage punk album. The French Kicks, on the other hand, went from too much guitar to New Order-like '80s material and has really improved. Check out their "Trial of the Century" for some fun retro music.

Speaking of retro, i still can't get enough of the bossa nova & jazz samba recordings I've been listening to lately. I love it all.

A friend passed on to us a copy of Modest Mouse. I've been listening to them for the last couple of days and love them. Some of their songs are slightly reminiscent of Talking Heads which is a good thing in itself.

I just bought The Darkness- Permission to Land. It's awsome! It's so strange to hear a man sing high soprano like Justin Hawkins can do.

Rogue was correct once again. I just got "Heartbreaker" by Ryan Adams. Absolutely wonderful cd.

Does anyone have any music by Jack Johnson? I like "Flake" and "Bubble Toes", but I'm not quite sure if it's worth it to buy the CD. Any opinions would really be appreciated.

Glad you liked "Heartbreaker", Indie. I've only heard a few Jack Johnson songs. I liked about half those songs so I've put off buying a full length til I hear more.

Recently I've been listening to the Brian Eno reissues of his early '70s stuff. Really worth the investment. I'd only heard a few tunes off these releases so it was nice to hear some great classics for the first time.

Love Wilco's newest cd, Phish's newest and final studio album and the debut record (I think) from the Killers, who sound like a mix of early U2 & Human League.

So many great new records out there, so little time to listen to them!

The new Wilco is on my list. I've heard many good things.

Yeah, Johnson is that way for me too, that's why I've been putting off buying any of his albums.

So like, what do you think of Modest Mouse?

I bought it ten days ago, but I have reached the "200 spins" mark, so I'm not sure of it.

And, by the way, what the bloody blue blazes does "Float On" mean?

I don't want to use that phrase for fear of reprocussions.

I don't speak "British".
