I couldn't find any thread on here where people discussed cds they have recently bought. I enjoy hearing opinions about music. And, usually, I end up buying some music that I normally wouldn't have. Of course the bonus is getting to gush about music that moves you.

I buy cds...um...all the time. For example, it's noon, I haven't left my house yet and I've ordered 8 cds already. (Bad internet!) So, I'll get the ball rolling on some cds I've gotten in the last month or so.

Tift Merritt's "Bramble Rose". Funky alt-country singer. She's got some pipes on her. Cd is a little slow in places but it's wonderful for those nights when you are lonely and unhappy and thinking about drinking yourself into oblivion.

Justin Timberlake's "Justified". Yeah, it's fluffy pop, but it's fluffy pop done well. And frankly, I enjoy the shots at Britney. I'm petty, I know.

Kelly Willis' "Easy". Another amazing alt-country vocalist. I'm actually digging her a bit more than Ms. Merritt. Once again, a little slow in places, but good lyrics and I just like the way she gives heartache a voice. I ordered her "What I Deserve" this morning, it seems a little more spunky.

Allison Moorer's "Miss Fortune". I love this gal's voice, but I'm not sold on the cd yet. Maybe the right mood hasn't hit me.

"Making Singles, Drinking Doubles" This is a Bloodshot Records compilation. This cd goes from amusing to emotional in the blink of an eye. Some interesting remakes including a bluegrassy salute to Madonna and a old-time country redition of "Every Rose Has Its Thorns". "Goodbye Honey" by Ryan Adams is quite frankly one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard. Perhaps it's the harmonica, perhaps is Ryan's just plain hot voice. Who's to say? Other notables include Neko Case, The Sadies and the downright amazing Kelly Hogan.

Steve Earle's "Ain't Ever Satisfied". Brilliant collection. Steve is what alt-country is about, he's a legend. If you can listen to "Copperhead Road" and not get the chills, you aren't warm blooded.

Ok, that's enough to get the thread started. Frankly, I can't recall what I buy, I get into a crazed frenzy. It's not pretty.

Oh I do love Steve Earle. I've added his newest CD to my wish list. The last new CD I got was Elvis Costello's Cruel Smile. It's ok, but I like When I Was Cruel better. I'm not complaining though, I won it in a radio contest.

That's fine, that's what the music section is here for.
I didn't get anything this year, I'm in music stasis.
We did get that Diana Krall thing, she's got a nice voice and those Nat King Cole songs are wonderful...marvellous...that you would care for me!

Sorry, that's a song.

I'm going to go on another Celtic binge soon, can feel it coming.

Oooh, this thread makes me happy

IndieQueen-I haven't decided if I want the new Steve Earle or not. I'm not sure if I want to hear John Walker Blues song. If you get it, let me know what you think. And, I just can't seem to get into Elvis Costello. I don't know why. He seems like someone I would like, but I just don't.

Last night, while I was out, I stopped by my favorite local cd store (which is fabulous, btw.) So, guess what...I bought more cds!

I picked up used copies of Vic Chesnutt's "Drunk" and "Little". I haven't listened to them yet, but they are Vic, how bad could they be? And, I got a seriously good buy on them too. woohoo

And, best of all, 3 Doors Down's "Away From the Sun". I've got a serious thing for this band. I love everything they do.

Let's see....most of them were for Christmas/birthday:

Matchbox Twenty--"More Than You Think You Are"
Christina Aguilera--"Stripped" With the exception of one horribly graphic and nasty song, the rest was very good and better than you'd think.

Sixpence None The Richer--"Divine Discontent"
Vanessa Carlton--"Be Not Nobody"
The White Stripes(!)--"White Blood Cells"
Moulin Rouge soundtrack #2
Rascal Flatts--"Melt"
Jimmy Fallon--"The Bathroom Wall"

So far not disappointed!!

Tryst-I bought the Norah Jones cd really cheap over a year ago. I didn't know anything about her but the titles of the songs sounded like something I'd like. I do. Her voice is fabulous. I'm not one for remakes, but her version of "Cold Cold Heart" would impress Hank himself.
I'm undecided on Coldplay. I liked "Yellow" but I've never heard a full cd. (I really hope they are the band that sings "Yellow") Travis, hmm, I've never heard of them. Out of those two, which should I start with? I'll buy one of them whenever you answer. I should tell you, I'm not a big fan of Radiohead and I'm told Coldplay is similar to them. Keep that in mind when you tell me which one I should buy.

My musical taste right now is running towards the American country-ish style, but I'm always open for more. I just need another cd case!

Last night I ordered:

Alejandro Escovedo: A Man Under the Influence.
Bobby Bare Jr.: Young Criminals' Starvation League
Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys: Forever Always Ends
Ryan Adams: Heartbreaker
Neko Case: Furnace Room Lullaby

Norah Jones CD is called" come away with me" not "play with me" as i have typed in ,shame on me, Parachutes by Coldplay, which features Yellow ,is a good place to start for you ,give it a few listens before you make a comment on it, i hope you like it and if you do buy A rush of blood to the head thats just as good,if you like Radiohead i'm almost certain you'll like Coldplay

I also like Nora's voice.
I think the Hank Williams is my favorite song on the Cd too..

What I like is a low range...I'm not fond of higher women's voices.

Tryst-Ok, I will buy a Coldplay cd tonight. I try not to comment on cds until I've listened to them a couple of times, so I'll let you know what I think. Thanks for the advice though.

Bruyere-Hello, I'm not sure what type of music you like, but if you like gals with lower, powerful voices, you might like Shannon McNally. Her music is sorta pop/sorta rock/sorta blues. She's got a great lower voice. Her cd "Jukebox Sparrows" is one of my favorite cds.

I like voices, first of all...I probably have the most eclectic tastes of anyone I know though...
I don't like high voices though...few exceptions.
I prefer tenors to sopranos.
But I like voices in general. Can't get a whole lot here in France without paying a fortune though.

Ok, Coldplay is alright. It's not something I will listen to a lot but every now and then I will. So, I consider it a good addition to my collection. Thanks.

I've recently bought an Emmylou Harris 2 disc greatest hits, a 2 disc Muddy Waters greatest hits, Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys' "Forever Always Ends", Bobby Bare's cd Young Criminals' Starvation League, Alejandro Escovedo's "A Man Under the Influence".

All excellent cds.

Say You Will- Fleetwood Mac (that isn't out until April, but I already ordered it)
Home- Dixie Chicks (I will never forgive them for destroying 'Landslide')

I'm a poor student so a new CD is like a whole turn upside-down to me!

Latest acquirements are...

india.arie: Acoustic Soul. A very personal album with a different feeling to each song, and very clever lyrics. Always worth a listen. Can brighten up the darkest of days.

Chess - Danish cast recording. I'll be the first to admit I'm a musical geek and this CD pleased me Great to finally see a full cast recording.

Otherwise I stole some Michael Jackson thingy from my dad... does that count?

I recently received the soundtrack for a movie called "The Slaughter Rule". I'm not a big soundtrack buff, but this is just excellent. Most of the music on here is from the brilliant mind of Jay Farrar (who I am going to see again Saturday!) Other notables on the cd include Ryan Adams, Neko Case, Vic Chesnutt (who is quite possibly the most brilliant unheard of musician on the planet), and a nice little track from Uncle Tupelo. Of course I recommend it!

I finally bought a new CD, it's been over two years since I allowed myself to do it!
But don't groan and moan, you might know of my dream to play the Celtic harp before I leave this earth, I'm not too keen on playing it in the afterlife...one's never sure where one will end up! And I don't fancy being like Tom and Jerry in the cartoons playing it...
But I bought a harp CD..!
It's nice, very calming...yet, I think I prefer the Celtic harp music..more folkie.

a few recent faves-

Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man "Out Of Season"- Beth is the vocalist of Portishead & this is her excellent solo album. A timeless haunting cd, orchestrated but minimal, folky in a
Buckleyesque way, lol.

Virgil Shaw "Still Falling" Alternative country in a minimalist
way, kinda like a mix of Gram Parsons & Steve Earle. Great thoughtful lyrics.

Libertines "Up The Bracket" Another band in the Strokes/Hive camp. But if you like that stuff, go for it. I do!
This one's not as pop as the Hives but it gets much better after a few more plays.

My favorite new cd's so far this year are The White Stripes "Elephant" and the debut cd's from The Datsuns and
Coral.

I like Radiohead's newest, "Hail To the Chief", though not sure if I like it more than their last two releases. Definately like Steely Dan's newest, and more so than their last one.
Despite the change in style, I like Jewel's latest but i hope
her change is just a passing fad...i couldn't handle another album like it.

For anyone who loves the Los Lobos Latin rock sound, I higly recommend "Plastic Silver 9-Volt Heart" by the Iguanas. They're a great live band, too.

The only new CD I've gotten this year is The White Stripes' Elephant. That CD is so good even my sister likes some of it! And she hates The White Stripes! Mmmhmm...
Cahyay, have you seen The Slaughter Rule? It sounds like a very interesting movie from what I hear. (girlie moment:It has Ryan Gosling in it!)

One of the best cd's I've heard lately is "Unclassified" by Robert Randolph & the Family Band. I think they performed on the Letterman show recently. Their sound is a great mix of Sly Stone-type soul and the jam style of Lenny Kravitz (though much better). There's a great upbeat '70s R&B feel to the music but it's not retro, it's now and it's fantastic.

My recommendation for various artists compliation of the last few months is "Who Will Buy These Wonderful Evils?". It's a 2 cd set of Swedish garage/beat/punk/psychedelic music. Cd one is comprised of up and coming bands, several similiar in style to the Hives and White Stripes. The second cd is made up of bands and singers from the '60s, mostly garage and beat tunes. If you're looking for something different, something with a lot of great talent you most likely never heard of before, something to get you away from your computer to party down to- then hunt this collection down, it's well worth it.

Just bought "Drag Queens in Limousines" by Mary Gauthier. Sorta sounds like John Prine's sister, brilliant songs in a sort of folkie-country-little bit bluesie style.
