On the anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi's death, several activists protested MTV's newest cartoon, Clone High USA, by having a sit-in in front of Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi, India.

Clone High USA is a show where a group of underground scientists secretly cloned various historical figures.

In the show, Gandhi's clone, 16-year-old "G-Man," is a doofy party guy.

A protester uses the parody of Gandhi as an example of American society's lack of certain morals.

The article implies that Gandhi is a universally beloved figure in India. Nothing could be further from the truth. The MTV thing is silly, lowbrow and cheap... but not sacrilegious. The really hurtful shots at Gandhi have been taken by Churchill and by the historians, observers and commentators, Paul Johnson, George Orwell and the late Richard Grenier prominent among them. I happily refer all and sundry to ace sodium's quizzes on the site about Gandhi and his followers for further background along these lines. (Ace is from Kerala, India).

Before I am kicked out of India for a variety of offences, let me make this clear:
Gandhi was NEVER liked by the pro-Hindu organisations like the RSS, VHP, Jana Sangh and Of course BJP (because theya re in power, they will refuse to admit it openly for the time being)
a lot of people blame Gandhi for partition of India!
BUT
if a foreign country shows GANDHI in a poor light, then we are united in our protest.
Before this MTV program , cartoons appeared in an American magazine "Maxim"(just a few days ago)again showing Gandhi in a bad light.
Out here this news comes under international news (so far, none of the politicans have made any comments on it incidentally JANUARY 30th (yesterday) was the day Godse shot Gandhi (celebrated as Matyrs day here!)

**** Reading today's newspaper, the Rajasthan (state of India) Congress issues a protest. Yawn....
