Kung Hei all (Laisee dao Loy???). Noisy as ever... but fun, except for the poor cats. Last night was a mass of firecrackers (highly illegal) and today is quiet while people sleep off the nights celebrations
Tomorrow is visiting day. I just stay in and read, sleep and hide from marauding children blackmailing you for laisee.

Hum Bugs to that... I couldn't get a bloody reservation at the Pine and Bamboo last night. How many more Peking Ducks have to suffer? I had to settle on a Tom Yum Goong and a number 38.

Year of the Goat? I thought it was year of the Ram. At least that is what thay said in a quiz question on TV here tonight. I don't know much about it all except that I was born in year of the rabbit. I will read up and educate myself.

Well, Whitaker's says "goat or sheep", and someone in "Ask Fun Trivia" said it was the year of the goat. Maybe I'll read up on it as well.

Somebody will be able to confirm it, but I think the word for goat is the same as for ram, Cally.

I'm not sure, but I think it is arguably the year goat, sheep, or ram.

It is kind of like the year of the hare when people argue that is the year of the rabbit or cat, the year of the ox when people say it's a cow, or the year of the pig--or is it the boar?

Anyhoo, happy year of the, umm. . .

Happy New Year!

Yup....... Google says its the ram (it looks more like a ram than a goat anyway?) But, I digress, happy whatever to whoever.

Maybe Year of the animal that provides the raw material for a nice new woolly jumper.

I saw a piece on BBC World News that said being born in the year of the goat is not a good thing at all and mothers almost due with their babies were cramming into hospitals in order to have their baby born before the year of the goat!

I read that, but I also read that some people want to have their child in the year of the goat because it means that child will have less competition when it comes time for school. Less people in their age group will be competing with them in the workforce as well.

Awww, never mind Tanzen...listen
Those born in the Year of the Goat are thought to be charming elegant and artistic, and like material comforts. However, 'Goats' tend to worry more than necessary and complain about things too much. A career in acting or gardening seems successful for those born in this year.
There you go.
or on the other hand...
People born under the sign of ‘The Gentle Sheep’ are creative, charming, sensitive dreamers but are also insecure and disorganised. Then, of course:

The Goat
Element: Earth Heading: South-South-West Color: Pink, Purple Yin/Yang: Yin/Yang balanced Chinese Name: YANG Meaning: Arts Sign Order: Eighth Season: Summer Favorable Month: July Counterpart: Cancer Friend: Rabbit, Pig Foe: Ox

Positives: Artistic, Cultured, Kind, Gentle, Intelligent, Sensitive
Negatives: Self-indulgent, Dependent, Insecure, Ungrateful
Famous Goats: Jane Austen, Laurence Olivier, Buster Keaton, Pamela Anderson, Bill Gates, Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman

The 5 types of Goat (Birthdate - Type):
02/13/1907 to 02/01/1908 - FIRE; 02/01/1919 to 02/19/1920 - EARTH
02/17/1931 to 02/05/1932 - METAL; 02/05/1943 to 01/24/1944 - WATER
01/24/1955 to 02/11/1956 - WOOD; 02/09/1967 to 01/29/1968 - FIRE
01/28/1979 to 02/15/1980 - EARTH; 02/15/1991 to 02/03/1992 - METAL
02/01/2003 to 01/21/2004 - WATER; 02/19/2015 to 02/07/2016 - WOOD

Take your pick.
PS Aren't you proud that Bill Gates is a goat??

it's sheep...the chinese word for this year translates to sheep in english
I have no idea where goat came from
probably some dumb foreigners who just can't get it right.
sheep, ewe, ram would all be correct. heck, use lamb if you want.

using Mandarin lo ma pin ying
the correct way to say happy new year is:
gong xi fa cai

I'm sure Ren is quite right with her interpretation

I have several reference books which all say Sheep , one of them giving the Chinese word Yang, this year will be followed by Hou=Monkey, Ji=cock, Gou=dog, Zhu=boar, Shu=rat, Niu=0x, Hu=tiger, Tu=Hare, Long=dragon, (I don't believe this one!) SHE = SERPENT (please note it's copied from a book and not my opinion), Ma=horse and back to Yang=sheep.
(Larousse FactFinder, Chambers, Macmillan and Pears)

Whatever a prosperous new year to all of you whenever you celebrate it!

(Roughly translated: Who, Ma? She go along to Yangtse Zoo. Who knew? Shoo! (away with you - I don't believe you!)

Hmmm, ok, so I'm being silly now!!!
