I've had this conversation a couple of times before. It would be nice to see more of the home countries players in our leagues, but to club chairmen, it isn't a sport anymore, but a business.
The Bosman ruling saw to it that British players would dwindle out, and more foreign players would come in, as they're cheaper to sign.
When this ruling first came in, I think it was the PFA chief, Gordon Taylor that said "This will be the death of the British game as we know it. Clubs will fold and in the future, we will see England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland picking lower league players for their international teams."
Interesting to note that clubs have folded, and more are on their way. Airdrie was one in Scotland, and I'm sure there are a few more, and in England, Bury and York City, to name a couple are on the verge of extinction.
On the whole, it comes down to one man. Mr. Bosman.
