But that's cricket. I'm suprised most of them CAN write. (sorry to all intelligent cricketers, the ones I know aren't very smart.)

I do like LOTR, but must admit that I skimmed thru all the songs and poems, they bored me to tears. My worst book was "The Corrections". Never cared for any of the characters, they were obnoxious and dull. I forced myself to read that dreadful, boring book only because "everyone" said it was great. See if I do that again.....

the handmaid's tale is a great book, it scared me and I am a fan of horror stories. I hope you enjoy it.

After reading The Hobbit and LOTR, I tried several times to read The Silmarillion (I think that's what it is called). At that time there was a brief revival in popularity for Tolkien as the first attempt at a film of LOTR had just been done. This was part animation and part real.
Anyway, The Silmarillion - could never get past chapter 1 and lord knows I tried. Dreadful book.

'The House of Sand and Fog' - I can't believe I spent time reading it - and they made it into a film! Whole herds of wild horses wouldn't have got me into the cinema..

I only watched that movie because it had Ben Kingsley in it. What a depressing pointless story.

I got through most of the LOTR books. I know you're saying stop bashing it but my problems weren't with the storyline particularly. In the last book they kept swapping between characters and I couldn't figure out the timelines of what happened when.

I actually liked some of the stuff I studied at school although that maybe 'cos I was rereading them. This included Looking for Allibrandi and Cage of Butterflies. I also liked Lord of the flies, which prooves how unusual I am with what I read most of the other kids didn't like it.

I think my worst books at the moment are Picture of Dorian Gray. I actually did read it but didn't really like it. I liked the plays by Oscar Wilde though. We had to do a critic report on a book for literature in year 12 and it had to be by one of the people that we were already studying. I also tried reading Emma by Jane Austen for this assignment but couldn't get past the first few chapters. I have also tried reading Great Expectations a few times but can't get past the first few pages.

About 20 or so years ago, I spent a Summer (of my own volition) reading the "Great Russian Novels." The Brothers Karamazov, Anna Karenina, War and Peae, etc... By September I was ready to throw myself off a bridge. Extremely depressing and soporific. I now think the purpose of Russian literature is to cure insomnia.

I did find a few things I enjoyed. The best was a story by Tolstoy called Strider in which the main character is a horse. I also liked some of Chekov's comedies, such as The Good Doctor. But, If you really want a miserable time reading, pick up a copy of Crime and Punishment.

Did you ever read any Gogol? Reading "The Nose" was the first time I realized that Russian literature could be anything but dreary.

I had forgotten Nikolai Gogol. At the time, I had not read him, but a few years later, I was in a company that performed his play, "The Inspector-General." Yes, I definitely enjoyed his work, however, that is the only one of his works with which I am familiar. I'll look for "The Nose" next trip to the library. Thanks.

Could you , as is usual when writing about a book in this forum, please back up your statement here? You are, of course, entitled to an opinion, but it does not exactly make your opinion plausible if you don't give a single reason. Thanks.

Are you referring to me or Professor? I was merely in agreement with his statement.

but here would be the definition for you ...

--

garbage:

3. anything that is contemptibly worthless, inferior, or vile:

4. worthless talk; lies; foolishness.

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1)

that about covers it for me.
Actually the vile and foolish alone are
enough IMO.

How 'bout you Prof?

Please could we have some quotes and examples from the books you seem to know so much about and have read so thoroughly that you can dismiss them all as vile and foolish?
Where are there some 'vile' parts? As for 'foolish,' is that so despicable that would it cause a book to be labled ' the Worst ever'. Most childrens' books, thank goodness, have foolishness in them.
Professor (and I cannot bring myself to repeat the way you spell it), where are the examples that back your damnation of any Harry Potter book? Please expand on your opinions. Thanks.

No thank you, i don't think there is any need to expand. I just don't like the books, you can take it or leave it as you wish; i just 'professed' my opinion, and I don't intend to write a thesis on it. I think that would make me a professer too. For the sake of the volatility of this thread by the tone taken, i bow amusedly down to the ruffled feathers. I will try to resolve not to dislike any more books, lol. which shouldn't be difficult lest i see Rowling come out of retirement.

Well, now, calm down. If you read back through the thread, you will see that other posters have been asked to clarify their comments too. Terms like "boring" , "depressing", "turgid prose', etc, are descriptive, and give us some idea of the poster's point of view. "Vile", however, does not.

I'm not a big HP fan either, by the way. I can see how come kids like the books, and I would probably have enjoyed them well enough if they had been around when I was a preteen, though I very much doubt if they would have been my favourites. As an adult, I found them pretty bland. For all the magic, there was little "magic" in the air, in these books - very little sense of wonder. Also, I have never been a fan of 'school stories', which these books very much are. They really strike me as basically a cross between any generic 'school' series, and some kind of 'kid detective' series - Trixie Belden, say - with a dollop of magic layered on top, that doesn't really permeate the underlying blandness. However, I only ever read the first book, and some of the second - maybe they get a bit more life to them further in the series.

To clarify the books are in my view poorly written. Reading the forum posts on the dark side of FT if you wish to describe it that way, Most of people feel the books are matter of life and death.

Thing is there are more things more important then these books.
