Only 5? That's going to be tough. These are the current top 5, easier to eliminate all-time favorites. ^_^ 1) Bevis Frond. British hard rock/rural psych band whose membership comprises of Nick Saloman and anyone who happens to be playing with him (usually other artists on his small record label). 2) Man Or Astroman. Sci-fi instrumental surf music, with some dialogue from '50s b-movies tossed in. These days they're more electronic than guitar based which is why they slipped from the top spot on my list. 3) The White Stripes. Jack & Meg have been dominating my cd player lately! 4) Wilco/SonVolt/Jay Bennett/Jay Farrar/Uncle Tupelo Ok, this is probably cheating but I can't decide between any of the Uncle Tupelo alumni and friends as well so i chose them all. And i'm tossing in the Jayhawks for good measure. 5) (tie) U2 & REM The golden oldies here lol. My apologies to Queens of the Stone Age, The Go-Betweens, the Green Pajamas, Belle & Sebastian, the Aqua Velvets and countless other bands (Iguanas, Datsuns, Strokes, etc) that i didn't mention.

My music collection is... well... eclectic. If I were have to limit myself to 5 bands they would be: 1) The Beautiful South 2) Pulp 3) Black Box Recorder (please somebody else admit to having heard of them!) 4) Pixies 5) The Smiths
Hmm. Maybe not quite so eclectic as I thought after all.

I've heard of them. It's likely i've read about them in CMJ or some other indie music magazine. CMJ has a free compilation cd with every issue and perhaps i've heard them there though i can't recall right now (too many compilation cd's, so many bands...). I know i first heard Beautiful South on a CMJ comp not long ago, loved what i heard & have added them to my "cd want list".

It was very difficult to choose there are so many fine bands out there.
My top five are in reverse order:
5) Runrig 4) Pink Floyd 3) Yes 2) The Pogues
At number one spot is:
1) Joe Hill and the IWW
Was there ever a band like them? They were the quintessential rock band, live fast, die young and nearly all of them did!
Joe was the musical driving force behind the band but he rarely appeared on stage. The band was fronted by 'Big' Bill Haywood and 'Rebel Girl' Liz Flynn who played her first gig when she was only 15. Backing them up were; 'Indian Blood' Frank Little, blind Keller and Jimmy Connolly on Harp. Many people have now forgotten their 'Preacher and Slave', 'Mr. Block' and 'Fraser River'. At the time, their following was so huge that when they played some towns simply ground to a halt. The situation got so bad that one town Bisbee simply threw all the fans out of town and Civil Rights, which were a big issue then be damned.
Things went bad for the band towards the end of the war. Like many people at that time they had a pronounced anti-war stance but lots of American boys were dying in an alien land. The government got heavy with them and for many people they were just plain unpatriotic.
Jimmy was the first to leave he went back to Dublin where he started a small group called Ica. It was not too successful. The decided to team up with Paddy Pearse's Volunteers to do a farewell bash at the GPO (this was before they built The Point). It was a Triumph, they certainly went out with style, and none of their fans will ever forget their rendition of 'Proclamation'. Jimmy wasn't too healthy shortly after his farewell concert he was found dead sitting in a chair.
Joe got into some trouble with the police and was found dead one day in the prison yard. His fans cremated him and tiny packets of his ashes were sent to his fans throughout the world so his ashes would be everywhere. Everywhere that is except the city he died in.
Bill went travelling; he ended up in Russia just as the old oppressive regime was falling. He died there along with the funky journo John Reed who wrote that cool guide to the Russian scene.
'Indian Blood' was found dead in his Hotel room. He was hanging from the ceiling in his underwear and a mask. Fans say it was murder. People in the know suggest it was some sort of kinky sex S'n'M scene gone wrong and maybe they are right, as the Police never really investigated.
Liz got involved in radical politics after the band. Nobody was sure what she was up to as she wouldn't speak to Journalists and such.

ONLY FIVE??? OK, I'll try... Silverchair (my all-time favorite) Bush (great sound, great lyrics, cute leadsinger) Metallica (they rule) Bon Jovi (I saw them live in Munich last June, so they climbed my hitlist again) Garbage (great sound & lyrics, extraordinary leadsinger) My humble apologies to millions of other bands I love, as well as to one-man/woman-acts... don't be mad at me, Alanis

I'm the odd one out. I struggled to come up with 5. I tend to prefer individual musicians (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Warren Zevon, Paul Simon, etc.) who play with various bands, to just bands. But, I can say my favorite are probably:
1. Fleetwood Mac 2. The Eagles 3. The Beatles 4. Steely Dan 5. Pink Floyd
The Stones are okay in small doses. Actually, Floyd is really only good in small doses too.
