I loved the SF anime "The wings of Honneamise", the animation was excellent, the story was good and the sentiments expressed were very close to my own. It is, I should add, the only anime feature film I have seen that I enjoyed.
Most of the feature length Anime I have watched is seriously and unpleasantly violent at the same time being aimed at children or early teens. I am also concerned about the paedophiliac way in which many female characters are portrayed in this medium.
Having said that I also greatly enjoyed the series "Strange Dawn" which was on the telly early on Saturday mornings last year. It was certainly "Strange"; the plot seemed to be about seriously bloodthirsty munchkins vying to control giant schoolgirls. The scenery was very reminiscent of Dean and the "Yes" album covers. Parts of the plot reminded me of "Walkabout". I suspect it lost rather a lot of clarity in translation and gained a huge amount of mystique at the same time.

I haven't seen "The Wings of Honneamise" but have read some great reviews of it. I'm anxious to see it. "Strange Dawn" is a new one for me, have to keep an eye out for it. Ranma 1/2 & Trigun can also be added to my list of favorites. There's still so many anime films & series I haven't heard much about.
I hear Japanese culture has a different attitude towards violence & sex in anime and other tv programs. I thought the 3x3 Eyes tv series was unusally violent & bloody but I heard it was the norm for Japanese tv viewing, airing in prime time there.

I love reading manga. I haven't tried Shonen Jump but I do like AnimeExtra and Manga Blast magazines...or I guess I should say "mangazines". A good magazine about anime I recently subscribed to is NewType. Besides articles about new anime and manga in the US and Japan, each issue comes with a dvd that features premiere episodes of new anime, plus previews of other anime programs and dvd's. ^_^

AnimeExtra has Fushigi Yugi, Marionette Generation, Short Program, Steam Detectives, Video Girl Ai, and Revolutionary Girl Utena manga. Manga Blast features Club 9, Shadow Star, What's Michael, Appleseed, 3x3 Eyes, and Seraphic Feather. My favorites here are Fushigi Yugi of AnimeExtra and Shadow Star in Manga Blast.
My current favorite manga is Planet Ladder, which is only available in graphic novel form.
Sorry, none of these feature Yuugioh. There was a big article on Yuugioh in Animerica recently and I imagine NewType will cover Yuugioh, if it hasn't already.

I'm not actually an anime fan but I heard great things about Spirited Away, so I rented it, and it's fantastic. The animation was beyond anything I've ever seen before - so realistic, and the story was remarkably original too. I watched it three times before returning it. This is one I'm going to buy for the home library.

Yes, 'Spirited Away' is just awesome.
check out some of the other Hiyao Miyazaki films. 'Castle in the Sky' 'Princess Mononoke' 'My Neighbor Totoro' 'Kiki's Delivery Service'
trust me...you will not be disappointed.
Did you know that 'Spirited Away' is the current box office king in Japan? it beat out 'Titanic' for that honor.
I felt that the train scenes were just serenely stunning the dragon flight scene was awesome great music, too

I loved "Spirited Away" as well as "Princess Mononoke", which is probably the best anime film I've seen so far. I'm
hoping to rent "Castle In the Sky" soon, I've read some great
reviews about it.
Recently I've been watching "Noir", a great anime series just released on dvd in the States. I've also purchased dvd's of the
"Argentosama" series and have just begun watching episodes
of "Please Teacher" and "R.O.D (Read Or Die)" .
I have "Animatrix" on dvd but have yet to start on it. Have to admit I'm slow getting caught up on anime.

Yes, I agree. The scene where the girl runs down the open outdoor staircase took my breath away. The nauseated looks of the attendents in the bathhouse made me start to feel sick to my stomach!
