Indeed even the great Dame of Crime, Agatha Christie tired of the Belgian. Not so with Holmes. His writer, Watson, loved him and loves him still on his bee farm in Sussex overlooking the channel.

Mind you Doyle, Watson's literary agent, was sick to death of the great detective and so wrote his own stories about Lost Worlds, the supernatural, and historic White Companies. But, Ah Watson, a friend to last the ages.

By the way, if you are a lover of Holmes, you'll recognise the name Col. Sebastian Moran. The Col. features in the latest Harry Flashman novel, "Flashman and the Tiger" and Holmes even gives a cameo. I can't recommend the Flashman series highly enough. They are rollicking good yarns and you learn history painlessly.

cheers

I agree about Flashman! Fast paced, witty, and fascinating, yet it's the stodgy, lugubrious stuff that makes it to the top of the best seller lists.
