We covered the pretty boys previously. How about a word on behalf of the male talented-but-uglies out there? I mean, they can't all be Rick Springfield and Morten Harket, right?
Just to start things: Charlie Watts, Donald Fagen, Gene Simmons, Leslie West, Tom Petty, Christopher Cross, Ringo Arafat-Starr, Peter Garrett, the late Freddie Mercury. Who am I missing?

Johnny Cash, Eric Burdon. Does Cher count?

"Tom Petty is ugly?" Yes, Heather, that was my first thought too!
Anyway, I think the prize for ugly is a toss up between Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger. What women see in those two is way beyond me!

Tom Petty? I can tell that a man drew up this list...I've seen him in person, he's not ugly... Rod Stewart, there's something tender about him..something real.
Mick, probably just his money attracts women...and he treats them badly from what I hear.
I can't even think of any of them who really attract me though...Cat Stevens in his prime...was, a wonder to behold.. I don't think I judge them on their physique..I'd rather hear a so called "ugly" guy sing well, than hear some prima donna who acts like a jerk sing.

Okay Bertho, I'll admit, I'd totally forgotten about Michael Jackson. Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart definitely pale into insignificance alongside Michael Jackson!

I like Tom Petty's music, but I have heard it said on several occasions that he resembles a squirrel. Of course, I'm just a dumb GUY, and perhaps our distaff side at FT has a keener perception of male aesthetics or the absence thereof. Sorry, Heather and MG, but Tom Petty really falls into the ugly list, especially Cool's picture.
Willie Nelson?

Michael Jackson Keith Richards (I can't believe he is still alive he looks like the walking dead) All the band members in Kiss,(Little to old to be playing with makeup now) The Loving Spoonful members Joe Cocker But most men who are not good looking are much kinder and more compassionate than men who are perceived as good looking. It's not what's on the outside that counts it's what's on the inside. BTW I happen to like Ringo and Willie Nelson. PF

Tom Petty has clear eyes that would melt most women...and that picture is really unflattering...it was something charismatic about him really...gut reaction. I'm wondering how he's held up, I won the tickets on a radio quiz and that'd be about 25 years ago at least! Here's a picture in his prime...but he's not bad now http://life.csu.edu.au/~lbenton/images/tom-petty/tom.gifeither...Cool I think you shouldn't hold it against the guy because his folks couldn't afford braces... Y oung Elvis, was pretty lovely though...you know Diana Krall, the new husky voiced singer has the exact same mouth...take a look if you don't believe me. She carries it off well..doesn't hurt that she's very talented and also has great legs. If you told me she was the daughter of Elvis, I'd almost believe you! Michael Jackson...well, he's gone beyond this world...but some people must find the androgynous look sexy...it sure sells well. What about David Bowie? I'm sure his sex appeal isn't terribly obvious to many..yet, he manages quite well! You've forgotten the obvious, unless I missed it, Joe Cocker...

Definite yes on Cocker. My mom the classical music snob, who considers all things rock & roll irredeemably vulgar, saw Bowie in some film and thinks he is "gorgeous." I always thought Bowie was handsome in a sort of Peter O'Toole way. (No, I'm neither single, nor thin nor neat. Not that there's anything wrong with that!) Wot about Van Morrison, though? The poor guy has NOT aged well. http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/590000/images/_594723_van_morrison150.jpg

I'd just like to raise 2 points:-
Point 1 - I'm proud to say that I'm no expert on male pulchritude. So I won't venture an opinion.
Point 2 - Point 1 notwithstanding, if Elvis was ugly, then there isn't much hope for the rest of us.

Good God, David Bowie is NOT ugly. Neither was Michael Hutchence.
As for Tom Petty, I'm sorry, but I join the consensus here. His appearance is about as aesthetically pleasing as that nasal, monotonous singing. Please, take that greasy string you call hair, your sickly grey skin, your giant hats, and that horribly grating voice, and 'don't come around here no more'.
I can't see that Michael Jackson was ever easy on the eyes--to begin with, or in any of his transmogrifications.
Someone who qualifies as both ugly yet attractive, in my opinion, is that singer from Tears for Fears.....what was his name? Oh yeah, Roland Orzabal (sp?). That other singer, Curt Smith, was too wimpy-looking, but Orzabal was strangely sexy, despite his Shrek-like appearance.
Ditto for Iggy Pop and Robbie Robertson. Both are technically ugly, I suppose, but still attractive to me.
Now, as for Aaron Neville. This is terribly mean, but Lord, that guy scares me too. As John Candy said in 'Uncle Buck':
"Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face".
Sorry, that was probably way over the line, but that thing makes Enrique Iglesias' mole look like a subatomic particle.

Let the record reflect that Robbie Robertson was DEFINITELY the best-looking Canadian, half-Jewish, half-First Nations musician in history. (That is if we count Trawna as part of Canada).

I am coming in here to defend Mick Jagger. Not only is he the true king of rock and roll, he also introduced a new I-don't-care-what-you-think-of-me attitude to music. The Rolling Stones have never let scandal destroy them; they're proud of it! I would also like to defend Steven Tyler. I think he has a unique kind of style that not many can portray on stage.

I concur with magpie in regards to "Tears for Fears" and Michael Hutchence. The only other person I found oddly attractive was the lead singer for Queensryche ( his name escapes me). If you ever catch the videos for "Silent Lucidity" and "Is there anybody listening" he looks quite attractive from one angle and then another angle you cringe, but thats just me With all the money Aaron N has made a little visit to the dermatologist shouln't have set him back much. Go figure
