My grandmother and I are arguing over England's Richest Woman, J.K. Rowling or Queen Elizabeth. I said Mrs. Rowling was in recent news, but she STILL doesn't believe me. I heard it said that her money is down after paying the Queen Mum's debts following her death. A certain William Hill had his fortune take a dramatic upswing! Not sure if this joke will be understood by anyone other than the Brits.

(The Queen Mum loved the horse racing and was said to have a flutter on the gee-gees, William Hill is the name of a bookmaker.)

Nice on Sue - I can beleive that one - years ago I heard the story of butlers being on 10% of the winnings for bets placed(at the time illegal to bet off - course!).

I was told a lovely story about the old duck, and I am sure it was true. The person telling me was a high ranking traffic policeman who often did escort duty when Royals were passing through his patch. One day the Queen Mum was due through at a certain time but was running late, panic stations and frantic radio calls discovered that she hadn't even left home in London as the racing was on and she had a horse running. Once the race finished (and she was very late) they had to stick their foot down and she shot through at about 85/90mph waving elegantly. Got out at the other end as fresh as a daisy and without a care in the world - I can believe it.
