Whenever you go to Microsoft Word on my computer, occasionally there will be a new type of "New Document," if you know what I mean. I just figured out that there's a New Document you can create called "my love." I think this might be a virus. Could you help me?

I haven't come across anything like that but if you ever suspect you have a virus the following are good steps to take:

1. Scan the whole C:\ drive with your antivirus program.

2. Make sure the virus definitions are up to date first.

3. Search the Symantec web site to see if anything is listed about a suspected virus.

If you have 'my love' showing up as a template that you can create a new document from, have a look in your templates folder to see if you have a template by that name.

Where the templates are located depends what version of Word you have. I can say that for word 2000 installed on Windows 98 the templates are located in: C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

Other than that, put out a search for the 'templates' folder.

TW - Agree entirely with what you've said BUT
If you have a virus - the virus checker on your machine is unlikely to find it (It's already infected the checker)
I've found the best thing to do is go straight to the virus checker site (Don't want to advertise and most of the sites have the same facilities) and run their free Home Check (It's always free, always up-to-date and will always tell you if you have a virus or not (and wether your open to virus, worm, hacker), they will also offer a free disinfect (hoping you'll sign up for their program).

It is in my Templates folder. The search didn't come up with the "My Love" template on symantec.

It must have been created for use at sometime then.

A good point that raises questions of my own. I know there are viruses that do this but am unsure if they can hide.

Other than what I read and pass on, I have to say that I'm on unsure ground with virus behaviour because I've never had one. I think this is due practices mentioned in other posts. I've reduced my risk of ever getting one to almost zero (only almost though! ).

How does such a virus behave when it infects the computer? Does the antivirus checker still appear to work properly but really do nothing, or does it stop the scanning operation working at all? If the latter were the case you'd know a virus might be present because drive scanning wouldn't start. Does the AV icon disappear from the system tray?

Since such viruses usually also disable firewalls might it produce something noticeable there too?

In summary, would it be clear that antivirus and firewall software was not working when these types of viruses perform an evil deed?

Etar - have you asked your parents to try and figure out what this is?

TW - If we could defeat the virus writers we'd be rich men.(lol)
What I was trying to say was if your computer already has a virus and you install a virus killer it will not necessarily kill the virus you already have (The installation instructions with the Norton (web download) clearly tell you to run their checks before you down load and again after re-booting your system.
Etar has admitted to not having any virus protection - so I'm surprised that the extra document template was even noticed - I couldn't tell you the names of any files in Windows Templates (I've never had or wanted to use one - always select the New/Blank and create my own page to suit what I'm doing.)
M - I'm thinking Etar should be sent to the stores for a long weight and some skyhooks to solve his/her problem - J

I'm a boy Fosse4. I noticed it by clicking "New Document" on Word, and it was there as a template. Actually, it's just the not-so-important-non-work computer that doesn't have virus protection. My other 2 do.

Suprisingly, I seem to know more about computers than they do! ^_^ No, I haven't, but nothing so far has happened to my computer, so I'll wait awhile and see what happens. And, Fosse4, the reason I noticed it was because it was in the "General" tab, so it came up when I used the New Document option. And there are two other templates called "Normal 2," which probably was there before and "Norm1al". I never noticed the Norm1al template before.

Etar - Please don't try to insult my intelligence any longer!
I tried to help you on the site and all you've done is insult and attack the people who have offered to help!
