These are all useless bits of trivia, the only use for which would be to impress people with the standard "Did you know that <enter useless fact here>" sentences. All of these have been taken from this site. I have chosen only those, that in my opinion are the most interesting.

  • Americans on average eat 18 acres of pizza every day.
  • Dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood donors.
  • If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you will have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
  • No word in the English language rhymes with "month". (read posts below)
  • An ant always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.
  • The name Wendy was made up for the book 'Peter Pan'.
  • You are more likely to be killed by a Champagne cork than by a poisonous spider.
  • TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters only on one row of the keyboard.

You certainly are right about that being a stretch. It's probably a matter of accent, though...

I'll edit my first post telling people to 'read post below'.

Silver, Orange and Purple are another three. I think there is another one but I can't bring it to mind.

Exit10, if you're talking about words which don't rhyme with anything, then I can think of 'river', which rhymes with 'silver'. I'm not too sure whether you were talking of rhymes, but I'll take it that way. Can't think of anything rhyming with 'orange' but if you come to India, you'll find a few people pronouncing 'orange' as 'o-range', as in a range of hills. And about purple, well, can't thinkof anything.

I think river is stretching it a bit but I came across a couple of others:

Pint
Nothing

and I also read that door-hinge could rhyme with orange.

aardvark - I haven't had the chance to check
discombobulate - I haven't had the inclination to check

I'd say 'bark' rhymes with 'aardvark'. About 'discombobo-whatever-it-is', I don't even know what it means.

Abacus could be one what? Sorry, once again I fail to understand. (you will note we have been warned to copy/ quote your answers as you change them after a few posts, even though you have been politely asked not to. ) Maybe you could help by stating to what you refer here. Thanks.

ren33, I think etartherat is referring to a word with which there are no rhyming ones...but then, 'mucous' (or 'mucus', one is the British spelling, the other is the American, I don't know which is which ) rhymes with 'abacus...

Sorry to upset your apple cart Etar, but there are at least 90 words that rhyme with abacus. Unfortunately most of them either relate to Latin plant and animal names or mythology which just isn't cricket for this thread.

However astacus (crayfish) is a pretty good word and cactus will slide in over the line just ahead of mucus.

But my very favourite, which was immortalised in a song by Rolf Harris (for those who remember him) was 'The Court of King Caractacus'.

About no word rhyming with orange, here's a limerick by Jim Farrand:

Quote:

I know of a scholar from Holland,
Who's vocab must need to be broadened,
There's no rhyme for orange?
But what about "lozenge"?
His list of word primes should be shortened!

I got it from this site.

    The same site also lists
  • purple (you were right, Exit10!)
  • pint (again!)
  • nothing (and again!)
  • silver (whatabout 'river', 'quiver', 'river'?)
  • month (the word that started this discussion)
  • orange (which the limerick proves wrong, but it might be purely a matter of accent)

So the only convincing ones are: 'purple', 'pint', 'nothing' (like the site says, 'of course something rhymes with nothing!), and 'month'. Can you think of any others, anybody?

Sorry Harish,

Without putting an 'l' into your suggestions for silver you are drawing a rather long bow, or is that quiver?

'Lozenge' is the cause of much consternation and confusion in 'rhyming' circles and I think it falls into the same category as cactus and mucus in the earlier post.

P.S. For my money Holland doesn't rhyme with broadened either.

Okay, fine, I guess I'm wrong about all these words rhyming with silver. About orange and abacus, I'm sure things like lozenge, mucus, cactus, King Caractecus (:)) should be acceptable.

Hey, anagram1,you thoud know that I altho lithp.

Hmmmm! Maybe "Wendy" first appeared in "Peter Pan", but isn't it really short for Gwendolyn?

The author made it up after a child's mispronounciation (sp) of the word "friend". (Don't you just love "Jeopardy"?) If you want some more interesting useless trivia just go here.

O.K., I'll quote a few of my favorite answers to words that don't rhyme.

For many years I tried in vain
To find a rhyme for month.
I tried and failed a hundred times,
But succeeded the hundred-and-oneth.
- Anonymous

A pronouncing gazetteer In Webster's seems clear
"stonehenge:" (Ston henj)
"orange:" (or enj)
Truely rhymesters must persevere.
- Don Alborell of Birmingham, AL, as published in the Mensa Bulletin, Jan/Feb 1984, p 10

It seems, said the poet, so strange
that despite my remarkable range
of prosodiac skill
that somehow I still
can't find a rhyme for orange.

Cordially,

Russ

Nice link, SilyLily. I searched that site a bit, and found this. Just some towns in the USA whose name-givers seemed to be a bit confused, and named their city 'Possum Grape' or something like that.

The names are really great, they include Doghouse Junction, Yreka Zzyzx, Jupiter, Sodaville, Oatmeal, Idiotville, Slaughterville, Pumpkin Centre, the list is endless! <tempted to put multiple exclamation marks!>
