We took a massive bulk order at school months ago and I paid $ 126 Hk for it which is about 15 US (but books here are a terrible price)

Well I bought my copy for Rs 700 which is approximately 14 dollars (as I type..).
Though one or two stores are offering it for 650 - 13 dollars (so I heard)

The official listed price is Rs 750. So not much of a discount for me

I dunno how you guys get everything so cheap. My best friend bought it in India for 725 rupees, if that is the currency. Rupals and rupees confuse me.

I'm not sure if this is the case with this book (I couldn't care less about Harry Potter) but often when books come out they end up being more expensive in the US (and possibly Britain) than they are elsewhere, because in the US they are published in hardback, and elsewhere they are published in paperback.

First prints in the US and the UK are always in hardback
about a year later
every book will have a paperback release
although this one is pretty big
so it might be a trade paperback

Can the people who bought the book in other countries please tell us whether it was hardback or paperback?

In the US it is Hardback.

How come in my friend's book it has 870 pages, and it is supposed to have 896 (English)? Maybe it was a printing error, or maybe around 15 top Harry Potter websites are wrong . . .

Rat--It is not uncommon for different versions to be of different lengths. Even re-releases of the same books may be different in lengths due to font styles etc.

Just for fun visit amazon.com & amazon.co.uk and look up any of the Harry Potter books. For example the US site lists "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" with 309 pages. UK lists "Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone" with 223. You aren't missing any of the gist of the book at all in either edition. You'll find that with a good majority of the books not just Harry Potter. The sites are not wrong.

Mine is the hardback version, I had a choice of two cover designs, the adult or the children's version - I bought the children's one. Both were the same price, the final page is number 766.

My copy (actually my sister's) is hardback and in English. That's the only available version in the Netherlands for now. The Dutch translation is released in november/december, the English paperback version is expected somewhere around that same time or even later.

I think my sister paid 29 €.

Just for fun I found a webcast from June 26th where the author J.K. Rowling is interviewed by Stephen Fry. I have not fully watched it, but please be advised there are POTENTIAL SPOILERS in the interview. If you have not read the book, or don't want too much information don't view it yet. On the other hand, those who have read it, the webcast adds a delightful accessory to the reading.

I got mine at Costco and finished it about 2 days later. I could have finished it in less time, but I took long breaks. Mines about 870 pages, if that's any help.
