I have just ordered a DVD player after turning the TV round and seeing that I have another scart socket at the back of the set. Am I right in assuming that I just plug the DVD player straight into that scart socket? If this is the case to view it will it be AV2, AV1 is the satellite decoder. I have wires connecting the satellite with the video.

Yes Sue that will be how it connects. The spare SCART socket should be labelled AV2 and that will need selecting on your remote control to view a DVD. The TV may select AV2 automatically when it detects that you have started a DVD. If not, just select it manually (or personually ) The player will no doubt come with diagrams of various wiring options so just have a scan of those first.

Tst, only just noticed the reply - thank you Martin. It hasn't arrived yet, I am waiting until it does before buying a scart lead just in case it comes with one in the box, I can dream. Exactly where I am going to put the DVD thingy I do not know, my television sits on a stand which has space under it for the satellite decoder and the VCR, no space for yet another box. Exactly why I ordered it I do not know, I very rarely purchase videos, normally my VCR is used to shuttle so that I can watch two programmes which are being broadcast at the same time.

It is a job to find room for all the boxes that feed into the TV. You can end up with boxes and wires everywhere! When finding room for yet another box, consideration should be given to ventilation of it and the existing equipment. In particular, try to avoid putting anything directly on top of the satellite receiver without allowing some spacing.

A Satellite reciever generates quite a bit of heat, even when switched to stand-by. It needs room for the air to circulate both above and below it. I've always raised satellite receivers up a bit by placing spacers underneath. Around three-quarters of an inch is a reasonable distance I'd say. Keeping electronic componenents cool aids reliability.

I haven't got a DVD player but when setting up the TV corner cabinet I planned for one. Most cabinets only allow for two items under the TV. A way round that is to remove the shelves and use spacers in between the video recorder and satellite receiver. Doing this makes room for another item to stack.

I've perhaps overdone the distance between the video recorder and cable box but if I need to find room for a DVD player I can make some by taking a bit off the 4 spacers. (The wood from the redundant shelves went to make speaker cabinets at the sides).

It's perhaps not always possible to do this sort of thing but try to consider ventilation when positioning exterior boxes.

Well that sent me scurrying to the shelf to check for space! The total height is only about 7 and a half inches, not adjustable. I have the satellite receiver on top of the VCR so it does have a little gap above, an inch and a half almost. the unit is a proper piece of furniture, as in polished yew, so not really an option to throw out or replace, it has a drop-down faux drawer front so I can't put anything on the floor below as the drop-down would obscure remote signals - but on the other hand the DVD will be used so infrequently that I would just have to close the flap - excellent idea Martin, thank you. I will place something on the carpet as a base for it to stand on so that it is not directly on top of carpet.

How about finding a new home for anything you have in the drawer, then removing it and using the space to put the DVD player in?

I don't have a drawer, it only looks like one, you pull the handles and the front drops down and hey presto, you have the shelf for the video and satellite decoder!
