In another thread, etartherat10 mentioned

Quote:

Ace_Sodium, the book is 896 pages long. I doubt that somebody could read it in less than 12 hours. And plus, not many people would start reading it at 1 in the morning.

and I had to comment on it!

And, just why do you doubt this?

I read very quickly and have been known to read long books in relatively short periods of time. An 896 page book is long, but it's not impossible to read in 12 hours - especially if it's something written in a format that's easy to read. And, if it's a subject that you're interested in.

And, I've been known to sit and read to the exclusion of everything else for long periods of time. I'll sit down in the early afternoon with a great novel and hardly notice that supper time has come and gone. It can be bedtime before I realize it!

I've also been one of those people that doesn't just read one book at a time. Growing up, I had a different book going in every room of the house. At the moment, I'm reading 6 books (and, that's just because I finished one night before last - before that, I had 7 going).

So, I'm not surprised if, for instance, someone got "Harry Potter" and read the whole thing in one sitting. It can be done.

actually it took me three sittings
had to use the bathroom twice and eat once
although I ate sitting down, so maybe that doesn't count
all told it took me about 10 hrs to get through it

however, I read very fast.
about 90 pages per hour give or take the complexity of the book and text print size

I have to state my case. I picked up the book at a midnight opening arriving home at 3am. I read the book for an hour before heading to bed. I wasn't able to seriously touch the book again until two days later where I finished it. All told I finished the book in just under 6 hours. When it is a book that can completely engross you time flies.

I'm like you Linda. I get bored if I have less than at least three books going. I read very quickly, and it takes a lot to tear me away from a good book. I can block out background noise, and I get very absorbed into books, almost like at movies; i.e., my heart starts beating very quickly during an intense chapter in my mystery novel. So I agree, it is perfectly feasible to read an 896 page book in under 12 hours.

I find that our children in school have read it very fast . They are now reading it again at a slower pace. It was almost as if they wanted desperately to know what happened, now they are content to slow down and enjoy it.
I am reading it slowly , as I also have "Adam Bede"(Book of the month ) on the go, a Sue Grafton, "My Name Escapes Me"by Alec Guinness and Stephen Fry's "The Hippopotamus", oh and a book of poems.I find I read about 6 books a week. The awful thing is , since I don't remember titles, I tend to look on the 'just returned books'trolley at the library, see something I fancy , and realise that I have just brought it back myself. It is getting a bit much.

Wow, 900 pages in 12 hours??? While I have finished a book or two in a single sitting, I don't know if I could read that much in so little time. Perhaps I would surprise myself if it happened but I don't think I am that fast of a reader. I have always envied people who could read so quickly and I came close to taking a speeding reading course on a couple of occassions. There is so much I want to read and so little time to do it in. I work a minimum of 48 hrs a week and then have 4 small kids at home that demand a lot of attention. I do well now to read one book every two weeks, but even in my best day I don't think I have ever read more than three books in a week. I envy those of you who are able to accomplish so much learning and enjoyment in such a short time, and I salute you. You are blessed.

ren, I can usually remember a title but I can't remember what the book is about. I'll think, "I know I've read this" but when I read the info on the jacket I don't remember it. Maybe it is age.

The worst are books where the title gives no clue as to the story. My husband is a fan of J.A. Jance, who has written a LOT of books, most with titles that are completely interchangable. We've found that the only thing to do is keep a list of what's been read, or we'd be carting the same book back and forth from the library.
Ren, how are you liking "The Hippopotamus"? I thought that I would dislike it quite a bit, from the beginning, and ended up loving it.

I once started reading a book and about half way through it I realized,"Hey,I've read this before..." I think it's hysterical, and even funnier I kept reading it.

I must be very fortunate indeed. As I have no children (yet) I have less distractions from reading. Thankfully I get a lot of my reading accomplished during my commute to and from work as a train passenger. It is always fun to be a bit nosy and try to see what other people are reading. You get some good ideas that way and also start interesting conversations.

?? What book? the Hippopotamus? It has only 356 pages in paperback.I do not call that long.
Agony, I have read about 2 chapters so far. I will let you know when things get clearer and I get to know people, but it is certainly funny!
