I use Geocities, which hardly has any popup ads, only lately I've been a bit disgruntled with it after I found that It'd been messing with my HTML. That was when I decided to keep a copy of my entire web folder on my hard disk.
(and no, it's not 'topcities' )
Silverginger, what's the popup-advert situation on bravenet? 100Mb webspace seems quite a bit!
By the way, etar, I suggest you stay away from Tripod and Angelfire, for every page you access you get anywhere between 2 and 4 popup-ads, which is really irritating.

And does it allow image hosting?

I've never noticed pop-ups to be honest, as I use a pop-up stopper anyway but pretty sure they don't have them. Just refreshed one of my Bravenet sites a few times without anything appearing so I would presume that they don't use them.

I got my site - domain name and web-hosting package - from Pickaweb for £7.50 per month. Very good package, no pop-ups and have had very few problems with them (ie - server down etc. etc.) Of course, now that I've recommended them, problems with my site are bound to ensue!

Well, most of the sites I see are around $5.00 for the same as free Bravenet or Topcities.
One thing, would it allow you to have a navigation menu on your website on Bravenet, sg? Excuse my ignorance, but a sub-domain is basically a part on your menu, right?

I created and maintain my site using DreamWeaver. I then upload the pages to it from my hard drive. Using a web design package like DW gives you the opportunity to create anything you wish on your site.

Internet Explorer does not, and AOL does, but AOL only makes a very annoying no-menu, scroll down site.

There was me thinking that Internet Explorer was a browser, silly me. Better not tell my boss, I am the Webmaster of a site of over 600 pages and I didn't know that simple thing - whoops. Please don't tell any of the 137,000 visitors to our site last year that it is written by such a thicky.

Etar - What Biggles is talking about is the free web space that Internet Service Providers give people who open an account with them. The space can be used to upload the files that go to make a website.
This is nothing to do with Internet Explorer or any other Internet browser. These only browse the Internet, which isn't the same as hosting.
If you use a search engine under the keywords of, 'web hosting' and 'browser' and read lots of pages on the subject, what does what will become apparent. All sorts of other knowledge will be gained at the same time.

TW - I've just started a course to teach absolute beginners how to use a computer . (LESSON ONE - this is the keyboard, this is the screen - yes that basic!) For someone with no computer expertise could you explain the difference between hosting and browsing! Do not use words of more than one syllable, slang, computer speak, or assume they know what a cursor is! I appreciate your answer was to someone who thought they knew what they were talking about - but in simple english - can you please explain the difference (I'll attempt it if you can't but no gaurantees i'm right!)!)

Just think of it as an empty box, you can fill it with whatever you want.

Does anyone here use Frontpage 2002? (or any other version of FP)
I used to always design my page there -somehow all the free sites seem to teaming up against FP (of course, you pay and it works.

I don't use Frontpage but it has some pretty good templates from what I see. Sort of 'rounded corners' to everything and interesting shapes. I've always thought I'd like to give it a try.
When I was trying to settle on which 'What You See Is What You Get' (WYSIWYG) editor to use I was put off Frontpage because of having tried 'Frontpage Express'. I did some pages using that and they didn't look right in any browser other than Internet Explorer. I wanted pages to look the same in all popular alternative browsers. I thought that Frontpage might be the same as Frontpage Express in this respect and put in bits of Microsoft specific code that other browsers couldn't resolve. Does it do that?
I notice the table layout of some sites can look a bit strange if you view them in anything but IE. Maybe these are done with Frontpage (I could look at the code I suppose!).
I got Namo WebEditor in the end. It's a bit like DreamWeaver but not so expensive.

Web Editors? What is wrong with typing in the code? I much prefer to type it myself as you don't get a load of filler code for spaces and the like, I need to edit on a regular basis and want to find the actual text quickly.
