A tough one to celebrate in the US, but it should be ackowledged anyway. To Yanks and other non-Canadians: Go out and be polite to someone. Order some pancakes and Homo Milk and pay for the mess with Canadian Tire money. Wear a goalie's mask. Complain to your congressman about US softwood tariffs. Listen to Bryan Adams records. (Alright, maybe that's going too far-- make that Alanis records). Refer to your neighbourhood as a "riding". Pretend your friends are Scottish and call them all "Gord". Bring an antitrust action against Krispy Kreme Donuts and Dunkin' Donuts. Ostentatiously obey a "Don't Walk" sign even when there's no traffic around. Come a final half in 55:2 with some Dexter Nukes 3-year-old. Pretend to understand the metric system.
To our populous northerly contingent -- Magpie, Lady C, Ballykissangel, Aballinshadow, ElfTwinkle, Lefois, Jubjub, Purple Fan, Kabdanis, Brainy Blonde, Myla, Jimbotbay-- and the ten thousand I've probably missed... "Have a good day there, eh?"

Thanks all, and Happy Canada Day to you too, Coolup. You are already an honorary Canadian in my books. I don't know if that's good news or bad.

OK, I'll bite.. what on earth is Canadian Tire money? Have a great holiday up there in the frozen North, and I hope your huskies and pet polar bears enjoy it, too...

(Is it Tuesday in Canada now?? Does that mean you don't get a long weekend?
Basically --- no, it wasn't a long weekend --- but things (stores, etc.) were closed on Tuesday.

Ozzz --- It's not exactly "cold" here now --- yesterday/Canada Day it was 29*C where I am (with humidity factored in it felt like 35*C) --- today is forecast to be considerably warmer (around 34*C without the humidity factored into it).

Ozzz --- Canadian Tire is a store here --- I guess it falls under the category of hardware store, although you can get some auto supplies, housewares, electrical, plumbing, sports, electronics, gardening (ie pretty much everything you want except lumber), and they also have gas bars.
For info on Canadian Tire Money check out this website: http://www2.canadiantire.ca/CTenglish/ctmoney.html

Thanks for that link, Elfin One! I was completely bamboozled. (How do you confuse an Aussie? Show him two shovels and tell him to take his pick, hehe). And I know that you do not have pet polar bears- my kangaroo just set me straight! It is a tad over 8*C here.. can you spare a little warmth? Pretty please?

(Serious question here) Can someone give a bit of background of the day, so those of us who don't know much about it can understand and appreciate it more? It's always listed on my calendar, but I've never had the opportunity to actually ask someone from Canada what it's all about. Thought I'd take that chance now, since there are several of you here! And, I hope it was a happy one for all of you - no matter what it's all about!
