Who would people put in these two lists? And I mean the top 5 overall (not just your top 5 personal preferences--but who you really think has the talent, the influence, the staying power, or the creativity to make those lists. I even have on my list one band I don't personally like much (the Stones), but I think they deserve the title.

Top 5 Musicians

1. Bob Dylan
2. Van Morrison
3. Elvis Presley
4. Warren Zevon
5. Paul Simon

Top 5 Rock Bands

1. The Beatles
2. The Rolling Stones
3. Fleetwood Mac

I don't know who to put in the last two slots on that one.

Your choices are almost the same as mine. I would put Elvis Number one in the Musicians category followed by Paul Simon at two and move the others down accordingly. I'd put The Stones before the Beatles and Status Quo instead of Fleetwood Mac. Apart from these few minor adjustments I agree with you! You say The Stones don't deserve the title-they played in this country last week and the queues were streets long for tickets!
Sorry if this post isn't set out properly. We're talking real music here!

Top 5 musicians and bands by talent, influence, staying power or creativity. It's tough choosing any five, and just five.

3. John Lennon
4. Madonna
5. Elvis Costello/Stevie Wonder (tie)

Bands

1. The Beatles
2. Rolling Stones
3. The Byrds
4. The Ramones
5. Led Zeppelin

I said the Stones DO deserve the title (of one of the Top 5 bands), despite the fact that I don't personally like them! (But without the Beatles, there would be no Stones, so I can hardly put the Stones before the Beatles.)

Actually, the Stones didn't incorporate the British Invasion sound until after they'd achieved popularity. When looking for the sine qua non of the Rolling Stones, it's probably better to look at Elvis, Howling Wolf, Chuck Berry or Bo Diddley. You could easily argue that the Stones would've had more trouble becoming successful in the U.S. without the prior success of the Beatles, though.

Yes, but all individual musicians you couldn't list under the "rock BANDS" category!

I wasn't clear. I meant to get across that the idea: "the Stones must rank lower than the Beatles because the Stones' existence is dependent upon the existence of the Beatles" is without merit, in my opinion. If that were true one would have to put, say, the Crickets higher than the Beatles. The order would have to be chronological in all cases where a band had another on the list recognized as an influence.

I think, though anyone could have taken the place of the Crickets. Not anyone could do for rock and roll what the Beatles did.

I would have to add on "Nirvana" to the top 5 bands. Having lived in the Seattle area for a number of years, I felt tremendously the impact that they had in bringing on a new wave of alternative music. But that's just my opinion

I am surprised there are no fans of the Who around.
The Beatles come first, of course. Don't have a top 5, though.
Btw, slightly off topic here, but has anyone read the book (or seen the movie) High fidelity? It's really funny - and the protagonist is obsessed with making 'top 5' lists.

This is a very difficult list to make, seeing how so many bands and musicians have made an impact on rock 'n' roll today.

Top Five Bands
1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Pink Floyd
4. The Jimi Hendrix Experience
5. The Doors

Top Five Musicians
1. John Lennon
2. Jimmy Page
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Syd Barrett
5. Roger Waters
