Ozzz2002! Chirpy Chirpy cheep Cheep was on the first album I ever bought! I was about 9 or 10 and the album was "Top of the Tots"! I'm *blushing* now. It also had songs like "The Pushbike Song" on it. Memories.. and now I feel old! ;-)

In my last year of school my year all loved "Gino" by Dexys Midnight Runners. We prefered it to "Come on Eileen" but no one seems to remember it.

I remember it - it's one of the most played songs on my iPod. The album it comes from, "Searching for the Young Soul Rebels" is a classic.

There are a few one hit wonders I could list but I'll stick to three I haven't seen here yet.

Jilted John by Jilted John
Fire by Crazy World of Arthur Brown
Uptown Top Ranking - Althea and Donna

In 1968 (in Australia at least - earlier in USA, i think), a guy called Scott McKenzie released a song called "San Francisco".
I loved it from the first time I heard it, and still do.
I have never heard anything else by him.

I wouldn't call these my favourite one hit wonders but now that I've thought of them they do bring a smile to my face. Ok Aussies of a certain vintage, do you remember...
The Newcastle Song by Bob Hudson?
Rack Off Normie by Maureen Elkner?
and dare I say it..
Shudduppa Your Face by Joe Dolce?

I know Joe had another song which did sell a bit but I can't remember what it was so I'm calling Shudduppa Your Face a one hit wonder.

Bob Hudson was a high school maths teacher at my school, the year before I started. I still have the album cassette which has the 'naughty' version of the Newcastle Song on it! Rack Off Normie was a great musical reply, too.

Shadduppa Your Face is still one of the highest selling singles ever released in this country, although for the life of me, I cannot understand why.

How about Part of the Union, by the Strawbs?

Ozzz, is that the version with the story of CinderFred? I'd not heard it before but of course Youtube has it there to save you dragging out your old cassette tape.

CinderFred, who worked in the Blast Furnace Department of BHP.

I was in Newcastle recently and drove down the infamous Hunter Street, and even the Hunter Street Mall (maul?). It is so sad to see what has happened there- almost every building is up for lease, and the whole street is seemingly abandoned.

And did you, too, christen your dog a four-letter word?

Moi? Christen a pet with a four letter word? Sweet, innocent me? Never! *snort* Now I can't stop laughing. You tube has William Shakespeare's "My Little Angel" and "Can't Stop Myself From Loving You". I still know the melody and most of the words 35 years later! I have things to do but this is too much fun!

I wrote a QQ about William Shakespeare! Seems that no-one outside Australia has ever heard of the songs because the ratings are very, very low.

How dumb was the guy from Smokie? He lived next door to Alice for 24 years and did not try his luck...

On a sadder note, Redgum's hit "Only 19" was very poignant.

"Only 19" is incredibly sad. The line "Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon" always puts things into perspective for me. A mate of mine loves Redgum and is teaching his 3 year old daughter some of the songs. I want him to teach her "I was only 19 months" but he's not so keen. Can't imagine why..

"Smiley" by Ronnie Burns is another anti-war song that tugs at my heart strings. It sounds so happy until you really listen to the lyrics. Neither one hit wonders but never mind

Tizzabelle, I love both of those.. the only thing with "I was only 19"..
Frankie kicked the mine the day that mankind kicked the moon.. god help him, he was going home in June"...
"Mankind kicked the moon" in July 1969.. June was still 11 months away...
and yes, I do know I am a pedantic cow !

Hi Tezza, That incongruity has occured to me too but I interpret that line as meaning "He WAS going home in June" i.e. he was to go home but stayed on for some reason. If he had gone home he wouldn't have been injured/killed. I don't know if that is correct but how I read it. *shrug*

"Everywhere That I'm Not" - Translator

"Jackie Blue" - Ozark Mountain Daredevils (they had one other song that charted, but when I ask anyone to name it - no one can)

"Life In A Northern Town" - Dream Academy (I know, an embarrassing admission )

Cydonia, I love "Life in a Northern Town" too for reasons I know not. I even bought the single and I rarely bought singles. Here's another one I love. "The Devil went down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band. I don't know about elsewhere but I'm fairly sure they only had the one hit in Oz.

The other hit they had (in the USA anyway) was "If You Want To Get To Heaven" which I vaguely remember from a concert they did for the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test sometime in the 70s. Happy days.

Amongst my favoUrite one-hit wonders would be "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me" by Reunion. I defy anyone to name all the artists name-checked it the lyrics!

Tizzabelle, Charlie Daniels is still big in the USA. He's a good ole' country boy and has a few other hits beside Devil Went Down to Georgia. I saw him in concert a couple of years ago and totally enjoyed his show.

I always have an issue with Redgum's Only 19 (shades of green) I think that was the subtitle. Anyway "Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon" continues "he was going home in June". Ok so he only had eleven months to go!!
I'll put it down to artistic licence. In any case they weren't a one hit wonder because Redgum also had the awesome "I've been to Bali too" I'm assuming its on You Tube. About to find out.
I couldn't place a single song but two that keep popping into my head is "Play the Game" by Wendy and the Rockets or Sticky Music by Suzie and the Sunsets.

But wait what about "One night in Bangkok" or "Ship of Fools" by umm, yeah that band eith that guy in it.

Oh and im also thinking of a song about and possibly called Managua by an Aussie band in the early 80's. Haha can you see a trend emerging?
