I forgot to add that this list is from 1998, so there may be more.

I thought this was hilarious:
Quote:

The most revered British sitcom of all time is one whose total episodes number barely a handful: "Fawlty Towers". Would we have still liked Basil and Sybill and Manuel if they'd gone on for 22 episodes a year for over a decade? John Cleese obviously doubted it, and the Americans to whom he sold the format have found it almost impossible to adapt. Years later, Cleese bumped into one of the execs in Los Angeles. "We've finally figured out the problem," the exec said. "We've got rid of that guy Bayzil."

I recently watched the British version of "Coupling" and loved it. The American version starts this fall, but I doubt it will be as funny.

Funny tidbit, quite a few people at the local PBS station rallied to not have this show shown, my mother being the first of them. Boy was she upset to hear me laughing so hard.

You're right that would be funny. I went to the IMDb and couldn't find anything about an american version of Vicar of Dibley.

Roseanne Barr purchased the rights to produce an American version of the UK TV series, Absolutely Fabulous in the United States, but it seems to have sunk without trace.

One Foot in the Grave / Cosby

Cosby was based on One Foot in the Grave? I would never have thought it was. Cosby could never be taken seriously as the grumpy old man next door ... well not like Richard Wilson (?) anyway.

I thought Cosby was about a black family with a doctor as the father - what show am I thinking about?

I think I've lost the plot - Cosby is nothing like One Foot in the Grave and I think Cosby started first!

There have been a couple of shows starring Bill Cosby called Cosby, the one where he was a doctor and had a lawyer wife was The Cosby Show. I believe the one they are refeering to is the most recent Cosby venture.

I knew it was Cosby and not the Cosby Show that they meant - but he does have the same wife in both shows and the similar name which is confusing. I can see the similarities, I suppose, but not enough to say that it is based on the original.

Yes, Whose Line did originate in the UK, but it had most of the same cast, Ryan Styles, Greg Proops, Colin Mochery, and a couple of the others that have been on the show. So I don't know if that can really be catergorized as an American version of the show.
