I think it's off to claim that, say, Titanic is the worst movie of all time, and I never bothered to watch Titanic because I knew I'd dislike it. So I'm starting a thread on just bad movies. Disappointing movies, dumb movies, movies that didn't make sense but you watched them anyway because they were on TV or your spouse wanted to see it.

My picks of the week: The Mummy and Animatrix.

The Mummy was pretty bad. It was the entertaining sort of bad, though, with obvious errors and big plot holes that you can pick at and have a laugh. Like for instance, these people were being stalked by a... well, what else, a mummy, except it wasn't even a mummy, it was mostly like a zombie or something and anyway, they're getting stalked and they know that cats scare it... OK, that's pretty stupid right there. The superhuman creature's big fear is cats. Der. Well, they know it's afraid of cats but nobody bothers to get one to scare it away so they get killed. They weren't out in the desert or anything, they were in a city. Apparently there was only one cat in town that weekend or something.

And there was a scene where the hero jumps over the side of a boat and his leather bag of weapons (like 20 guns with ammo) floats. Realism obviously isn't the point of a cheesy adventure movie but this one couldn't suspend a gnat's disbelief with a crane. It didn't help that they kept throwing in bad jokes to kill time between special effects. It was a good movie to watch on TV for free and make fun of, though.

I rented Animatrix but I can't say I was disappointed or surprised that I didn't like it because I'm not a big Matrix fan or an anime fan. There were 9 segments to it and a couple didn't suck. The ones that did suck mainly did so because: they didn't make sense (even by Matrix standards), they were cheesy teen angst fantasies, they were cliches, or a combination of the three.

"Master of Disguise" I know it's a kid's movie, but there are plenty,PLENTY of much more enjoyable kids movies out there. Just ask Pixar...... Besides I wouldn't want my kid watching it (not that I have one) because I wouldn't want his/her brain to shrink. 'Cause that's good for no one.

Thank you, SillyLily, I will never watch that movie. I had the feeling it was bad, but you've convinced me. Maybe if I'm doped up or held hostage or something I'll watch it, but other than that, never.

As it happens, I saw a pretty bad movie tonight: The Man Who Cried. The title should have tipped me off but it had such a good cast. Some of them did very well. Still, the movie as a whole went beyond disappointing into bad, at least for me. My sweet-hearted wife said it was borderline but the more we talked about it the more it seemed bad. The problem was mostly script and casting in my opinion.

We also watched Shadow of the Vampire and Sex:The Annabel Chong Story and both were pretty good.

No problem! *sighs* I love helping people! Moving on:

"The Man Who Cried"-- That has Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci in it,right? That is a likeable cast. I,myself, haven't seen it but it always sounded pretty good. What was so bad about it?

Critically acclaimed "In the Bedroom." Beautifully acted, yes. And very realistic. But you know what, so is life, and I don't pay $8 to sit in a theater for two hours and watch life. It was the most excrutiatingly boring movie I have ever seen.

Lily, one of my big problems with The Man Who Cried was that Ricci, who I really like, has possibly the fewest lines I've ever known a star of a movie to have. When I complained about it to my wife she pointed out that Depp barely had any either. The two main supporting actors had more each.

There were a couple good scenes but the movie as a whole was bad.

I saw one movie this week that I kind of liked but might qualify as a bad movie. It was a Japanese-American movie called Brother. I liked that it was real violent and was an unusual take on gangster movies. I didn't like that it was too long and the acting was bad. Overall, I'd say most people would find it a bad movie.

I bet a lot of people would say Dancer in the Dark was a bad movie too. It stars Bjork and it's a musical tragedy. Even the director ragged on it a lot but I couldn't bring myself to hate it, really.

I second that about In the Bedroom. Critical acclaim or not it just wasn't that good of a movie.

I seem to be a minority on FT, but I liked Titanic. I thought it was very entertaining even with the "teen love story" angle.

I have tried several times to watch "American Beauty" but can't seem to sit through what may be the worst movie to ever win a Best Picture Oscar. The other day I rented Amadeus and was reminded that every now and then the Academy Awards bestows a Best Picture Oscar on a film that truly deserves the honor. F. Murray Abraham did a great job but a dozen actors could have pulled off his role just as effectively. Tom Hulce (accent excluded) did a fantastic job as Mozart and I think it was a crime that he didn't win Best Actor; it ranks as one of the worst omissions along with Sean Penn being passed over for Best Actor for his role in "Dead Man Walking".

And if "In The Bedroom" was boring, don't try to watch "The English Patient" which may be the most boring movie to ever win a Best Picture Oscar.

Ironikit, I know what you mean about Dancer in the Dark. It's undoubtedly odd (gee, I wonder if Bjork could have anything to do with that?) but I just thought it was great. I am a fan of Bjork's music though, so maybe that helped.

But, back on topic. It's not easy to pick a worst movie. There are so many contenders. On the Mummy tangent, I actually thought Mummy Returns was about a thousand times worse than the first, and that's saying something.

Also right up there was Mission: Impossible 2. That was the closest I ever came to walking out on a movie at the cinema. If I hadn't paid $12 to see it, I would have, but I'm a stingy bugger.

It is so hard to think of the WORST movie I have ever seen. For some reason, "Vanilla Sky" comes to mind, but I saw that recently and thought it was just plain terrible.
I am sure if I thought harder, I could come up with a Top 10 List.
BTW...I loved "American Beauty"

I thought "American Beauty" was good, too. I think the worst movie I ever suffered through was a thing called "Moment By Moment" (1979) with John Travolta and Lily Tomlin. A dreadful thing it was.

I just thought of another one: Remains of the Day.

Maybe it has something to do with my age and the circumstances. I was 16 and took a girl along to see it. Thought it would be a good "chick flick" thing to see. We were both bored stupid by it. Of course there are other things one can do in a dark cinema that can relieve boredom.

Not to be anal or anything but the topic isn't worst movie of all time, it's just pretty bad movies. There's already a worst movie quiz.

I, too, thought The English Patient was disappointing. I liked the novel pretty well, partly because it was concise. The movie was boring in comparison.

Although it was straight-to-video (and thank God, because I think everyone would have demanded a refund), "Addams Family Reunion" was the worst movie I've ever seen. After "Addams Family Values," someone wanted to cash in on a sequal and with the death of Raul Julia, they decided to use an almost entirely different cast, sets, etc. This proved that it's not the franchise, but the actors and the storyline that made the first two movies good.

I even passed up the chance to buy the video of this movie for $5...I'm a completist (like having everything), but I'm not that insane.

"Battlefield Earth" was pretty bad. I kept falling asleep during it,and my best friend kept waking me up because she thought my dad would get mad at me. Sorry, but not even Barry Pepper could keep me awake...
