I'm getting kicked off in about two minutes, so I'll be quick. Maybe check all Hawaiian towns for towns that don't sound Hawaiian? Like at www.openhere.com or something... good question, I'll check back tomorrow!

You know, this just occurred to me, but is this a trick question, as in every state having a state capital? Just wondering...

I found a Mountain View in Hawaii. Maybe this is it?

Nope, just tried that with Florida and there was none. [Frown]

Hawaii was the first state I checked. The only "non Hawaiian" name that I found was Princeville. I checked a few other smaller states, and that was not there. I'm at a loss. Maybe Washington D.C., that represents every state.

I normally get online while I'm at the library, and did some research about this. According to the 'Gazetteer', which is a HUMONGOUS list of place names, right down to elementary schools, historic markers, and the like- there is no such town! I used Hawaii as the main state to check, and found nothing. Unless somebody else can dig deeper, I'd say you can stick a fork in this one, it's done....

...almost a month later...

In reply to:

The city name which can be found in all 50 states is GREENVILLE !! (Each Greenville may not be spelled exactly the same)

This is the answer according to Key to The City (click here) , but that don't mean it's true....

Libbylu,

Thought I'd take a look at this one as it still appeared that there might be some doubt.

On the basis that the "Key to the City" site had an entry by Dawne Clark claiming that "Greenville" is the name, I checked it out in Hawaii.

There is no such such city or town by that name in Hawaii.
1. Looked in a road map of Hawaii - not there.
2. Accessed the United States Postal Service web site (www.usps.com) and did a search - not there.
3. Looked in my unabridged USPS ZIP code directory for Hawaii - not there.

Also, there is no town, city or county in Hawaii that begins with "G," so the the answer is not in a spelling variation.

So, there is no town or city name that exists in each of the United States. I think the effort made by those who did research as indicated by the above messages is sufficient proof.

The bottom line on this is that you should not believe what persons post on web sites without checking them out.

For example that same "Key to the City" page has that old chestnut "The San Francisco Cable Cars are the only mobile National Monuments." I've even hear a man say that a conductor on a Cable Car told him that.

The fact is that the San Francisco Cable Cars are not a "National Monument," they are a "National Historic Landmark" so designated in January 1964 by the US Interior Department's National Park Services. There are "National Monuments," 73 the last time I counted, and none appear to be mobile.

Cordially,

Russ

("Cordially, Russ", I think this might have been what you were alluding to, but I thought I'd say it, anyway!)

In reply to:

There's a reason for that. There's no "G" in the Hawaiian alphabet. There are only 12 letters: 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and 7 consonants (h, k, l, m, n, p, w).

Linda,

Absolutely!

I considered mentioning that fact, but decided against it because standard English with all 26 letters has found its way to Hawaii. Thus, there could be the argument that there could be a city or town beginning with a "G."

Lived in Wahiawa, then Pearl City, Hawaii, for total of four and a half years. One of my degrees is a BBA from Chaminade U. in Honolulu.

Thanks for the feedback Linda -- you added another dimension to this discussion.

BTW, no need to be formal, call me "Russ." The "cordially" is my usual attitude.

E malama pono (take care).

Cordially,

Russ

But, I like calling you Cordially, Russ! It's such a cute name!

You're right about the English alphabet's getting over there. I'm trying to think of an example of a place that has a non-Hawaiian name. Can't off the top of my head, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

O.K. Linda, if you think "Cordially, Russ" is cute, you can use it.

On Hawaiian towns and cities that are not Hawaiian, there are:
1. "Captain Cook" on the Big Island
2. "Sunset Beach" on the northern shore of Oahu
3. "Volcano" near the Kilauea Crater on the Big Island.

Everytime I hear or see the word "Kilauea," I flash back to a show put on by my son's grade school class in Hawaii. They were in Hawaiian costume (loin cloths or grass skirts) and did a song called "Kilauea's erupting!" Now, that was cute, particularly when they ran off the stage in mock terror!

Cordially,

Russ
