Did you know that there are over 80 presidential candidates including one from Guam? Check out the following Web site: http://www.politics1.com/p2000.htm

Of course, candidate and candid both come from the Latin for white; candidates in ancient Rome whore white togas, and white was a symbol for honesty and virtue...as in candidness. Too bad a lot of our present candidates don't measure up to such standards! tjoeb};>

There's nothing like a little "mud slinging" in politics, the origins of this come from Rome just like candidates

It dates back to ancient Rome when candidates for the senate wore white togas, inviting mudballs from detractors, says "Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts." The toga of an unpopular figure soon became "toga maculosa" (defiled by mud), meaning he could no longer be a candidate-- literally, "clothed in white." http://www.ohio.com/bj/features/strange/docs/strange000110.htm
