What about MAZDA? The company founder was named Matsuda, and Mazda, from the persian god of light (the name once sold light bulbs, i.e., Edison Mazda), was chosen because it sounded like the Japanese pronunciation of Matsuda. (Yeah, I know it's not an initialism like the rest, but I felt I just HAD to include it!)

That is correct, of course I started this journey when I came across the book 'Trade name origins' in the library, and was amazed by how many names were nothing like I thought. I then spent 20 or so years (when I had the time) searching out those not in the book. This ended recently with quoted list, which I just edited as I realised it wasn't clickable. I've got a few more since then, but the page became full! Any more contributions always welcomed.
