Isn't strange how queer coincidences happen with US Presidents.

The Kennedy clan is a great example. But I found this strange fact about George Washington when it arrived in my email.

Did you know that GW died on the last hour of the last day of the last week of the last month of the last year of the 18th century? And that he died after being bled by leeches?

He also had to borrow money so he could travel to his inauguration.

Dreamweave, my facts say that he died on December 14. 2779. I don't believe that is the last week of the month. Am I missing something here. Did you know that he declined a third term in 1796, setting a precedent followed by all Presidents until F.D.R?

Mmm, you're right, Sandalwood, My list of Presidential trivia also informs that GW died on 14 Dec 1779 from a cold (cold leeches?) ... he also had a marijuana patch in his back yard.

The source of the incorrect information was from <doughels@erols.com> <AikensTrivia@onelist.com>

Very, very misleading!

There is another possibility. I vaguely recall that somewhere the calendar changed. Off the top of my head I don't remember any details. When I have a couple of free minutes I'll try to research it, (unless someone beats me to it) and report back.

BTW, what was the year GW died? (a little confusion here!)

First of all....and it has been bugging me for ages.....what does BTW mean ?

As far GW death date....the calender was changed so that in fact he did die on the last day. I remember reading that info here in FunTrivia.

So where do we stand with GW's real death date .. ie: at the time he was alive and died .. if that was before the calendar changed (is that the extra 11 or 13 days they tacked on the Gregorian calendar ??)

... so could it have been the last hour of the last day of the last month of the last year of the last century?

BTW, what does FIWI mean? (I think that's it ..)

Hiya Gunna!

The very idea, my word!

One simply must explore the full realms of trivial space in order to systematically eradicate those diabolical points of view sent out by the aliens in an effort to bamboozle the rest of us so that the remainder can fundamentally sift through the factors of the situation!

I thought everyone knew that ..

Acuatually, I heard from a professor at college (I'm not in college, I just took a class) that he died of a cold, like someone said. But he got the cold becasue he was fooling around with some guy's wife, and he came home so he had to climb out the window in december without his pants on. He caught a cold and died. Heh, makes you look at Bill Clinton in a whole new light, doesn't it?

I heard the same story about GW's escape out another woman's bedroom window and his ensuing illness leading to his death - the year of his departure was 1799 which several people managed to mangle particularly well - LOL !
I'm not up to snuff on the calendar change thing....

1799 was not the last year of the 18th Century; 1800 was.

Similarly, 2000 is the last year of the 20th Century, not the first of the 21st.

I'm afraid someone messed up here. Dreamweave and sandalwood, how could Washingtion die in 1779? He didn't leave office until 1796. And as Tony stated, 1800 was the last year of the 18th century, proving that the e-mail was wrong, changed calender or not.

The calendar change: when England and its colonies switched to the Gregorian calendar, 13 or so days were REMOVED (I think from September or October). It happened in the early 1750s (if anyone really wants to pin it down, there was a big controversy and I think Ben Franklin got involved, so you should be able to find something), so it wouldn't have changed Washington's death date as it happened 40 years previously.

Hope this helps (and that someone still cares after a month!! )
