If you think croissants are French, think again! They came from----Vienna! In 1683, the Ottoman Turks were besieging Vienna. One baker expressed his patriotism by rolling his pastry dough in the shape of the crescent moon, symbol of the hated enemy, so at least they could eat it! "Crescent" comes from the Latin root for "to grow", as do "increase" and "crescive", and the crescent moon has been noted for "growing" into the new moon. Of course, croissants do anything but grow, thanks to hungry gourmets! tjoeb};>
