* A cow gives nearly 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.
* Cows actually baby-sit for each other. Small calves are settled into the grassy pasture & while 1 or 2 cows stay nearby to baby-sit, the rest of the moms go off to graze. Then they rotate back to take their turn baby-sitting while the 1st 'sitters' have a turn at the grazing.
* Cows eat their afterbirth.
* Cows navigate by looking at the ground. If the field the cows are in is flooded, they are not able to find their way home!
* Cows swallow metal objects! It happens too often & believe it or not, we ranchers refer to the sickness that follows as 'hardware disease'.
* Every day the average person sees at least one thing relating to a cow (be it a poster, a cow type print, a picture or a real cow).
* If a cow has twins, a bull & a heifer, the heifer will never be able to reproduce.
* It seems that cows are grazing animals. They pretty much like to graze on grass. Grass is found on the ground in the cows' pastures. Other things are also found on the ground in the cows' pastures; things like nuts, bolts, nails & bits of barbed wire. These things, unlike grass, do not sit well in a cows digestive system. Some cows have even died (Oh NO!) from eating these metal things & then trying to pass them through their digestive system. So, for years now, the farmers have been feeding new born cows (calves, I think they're called) magnets. These magnets stay in the cows' stomachs their whole life. Now the cows don't have to pass the metal things through their digestive systems. The cow magnets hold onto the metal.
* Most cows give more milk when they listen to music.
* The City of New Delhi employs 100 professional cow catchers to control the 40,000 cows that roam the streets.
* There are more cows in Nebraska then people!
* To make 1 pound of cheese, a dairy cow must 1st eat 3 pounds of food.
