If you have Norton AntiVirus, it will pick up any virus from a file that's downloading.

Not always. I keep my Norton up to date and I still managed to pick up a darn w32 exception from Kazaa. I use Kazaa lite now and I haven't had any problems.

I can't speak for anyone else, but Kazaa Lite has not caused me a single problem since I downloaded it several months ago. Kazaa, on the other hand, installed a bunch of irritating features that I neither wanted nor needed--some entirely without my initial knowledge. Given a choice between the two, I'd definitely opt for the 'Lite' version. That program deserved to be tampered with for misleading users, in my opinion. As for KL's ability to filter out viruses, though--I wouldn't rely solely on it to do so, despite any claims I heard. I'd want to make sure my anti-virus program is running at all times. Nothing's foolproof of course, but it certainly should help things.

Magpie has hit the nail on the head - nothing is virus exempt - the virus makers will always be one step ahead of the virus killers that's their pathetic aim in life! You can only try to keep up by having the latest anti-virus programmes and crossed fingers that you don't get hit between updates.

With proper care I believe it is possible to be virus proof. Unfortunately, it isn't enough just to know how to make a computer do what you want it to. It's equally important to have knowledge of computer maintenance. Part of this is about using a firewall and keeping the virus files on the computer up to date. Such measures will help prevent virus writers being successful in their endeavours to mess your own and other peoples computers. Giving attention to this is almost a responsibility these days I think. Viruses that do all sorts of dreadful things are just waiting to be passed on from user to user.
There are things that can be done to avoid, or at least very much lessen, the chances of getting a virus. I believe I have them covered but, not trusting that entirely, steps are also taken to avoid passing them on.
See how these questions go. What I think the anwers should be are written afterwards:
Does the computer have a firewall? - YES
Is the firewall the manufacturers latest version? - YES
Is the computer vulnerable to attack through open ports? - NO
Is the e-mail client using HTML to display messages? - NO
Are messages being sent using HTML? - NO
Is the Preview Pane disabled in Outlook Express - YES
Can you tell what is SPAM just from the title of an e-mail without opening it. - YES
Are you able to resist the tempation of opening rubbish before dumping it? - YES
Do you visit the Windows Update site at least once a week? - YES
Is the Antivirus software up to date and also the virus definitions? - YES
Are outgoing file attachments scanned with up to date antivirus software before sending them to friends, family or business colleagues? - YES
Do you open incoming e-mail file attachments from unknown sources (Microsoft does NOT send out e-mail file attachments) - NO
Are incoming file attachments, even from known sources, scanned with an up to date virus scanner before opening them? - YES
If any terminology in the above is unknown, or for further knowledge on any of it is required, just type a few choice keywords into a search engine. The expert opinions are out there.
The main thing is not to think it won't happen to you.

Er....Kazaa Lite WITH the spyware! They're both the same program, but one has spyware, the other doesn't.
Take your pick, but I wouldn't touch Kazaa at all.

I haven't used it but I understand that, basically, it facilitates file sharing directly between one computer and another without going through a server. In practice, a file requested for download to your computer may come from more than one computer that has made the file available. You can make files on your computer available to share with others too.

SG - no slight intended, I can't remember how many updates to security on Microsoft I've downloaded. The Idiot minority with nothing better to do than hack or write virus programmes will always be able to find a minor flaw in an otherwise perfect programme to tack on their little (sometimes very costly) additions or use the alternative tack of promoting a perfectly legitimate programme as a virus via an e-mail chain letter to get people to delete it and suffer the consequences (EG the little teddy bear icon). I presume they must get some kudos or satisfaction from what they do, I personally would put them in the virtual Stocks!

Yes, these idiots will continue striving for 'success' as they like to call it. We will strive to eliminate them, and are doing well at the moment. In time, hackers for fun will be a thing of the past.
